My Toshiba Qosmio laptop came with an illuminated keyboard and it's great, I really like it.
I was thinking about getting an external full sized illuminated keyboard too.

get a zippy its small and compact without the side number pad. I have one its lit up in blue LED.

or you can opt for this awesome multi colored backlit full size Zippy in your favorite format Wiz. I cant recall or find the smaller ones available anymore.

If I used an illuminated keyboard, I would probably opt for a wired version .. otherwise you'll be feeding batteries like crazy, as it needs to be illuminated all the time it's on.

not a bad choice but Steve raises a good point. Wireless is good but again batteries then need to be kept on hand to avoid an embarrassing moment. Also that unit is pretty space taking as in big. I do like the thin line design tho.

Someone was talking about one here yesterday Wiz I forget who. If you do a search you will probably find it

With the risk of being called "dumb" I'm wondering if this type of keyboard is for use only with desktops vs. laptops?

The keyboards will work with any computer with a USB port. I use only laptops (power saving on my part), but you can plug them into anything.

I've had mine for quite some time now, and it stands up to a lot of abuse -- I'm always dropping ashes in it, because I almost always have a smoke in my hand. Just turn it upside down and shake it out every couple of days.

the one I have is compact due to the lack of the number keys which looks better with a laptop in my opinion

Mine is included in my Laptop. It has an energy saver feature, when not in use, it turns itself off. Touch the keyboard and it lights up again. I can also manually turn it off if I don't need the illumination.

I use one with my mp3 controller, and the Numark mini-keyboard crapped out last year.
Bought an illuminated mini keyboard thatgets power thru the USB.
I was getting a little interference when it was lit, but it has worked fine ever since.
I really like it better than a regular KB.

I think I would try this...
