Thanks Scott! That IS about what I'm looking for and I've decided to increase the amount I'm willing to spend to around that amount.

I have my eye on one particular machine right now. It's an i5 too, 500GB, 1GB graphics memory, VGA port etc. I'll find out Monday if I'm getting it. :triwink:

We have 1 rule in our company when it comes to computers. Nothing but HP is worth a look, Acers have failed, IBM's have failed, Dells are Junk, But HP's have NEVER failed. I still have my original 9 year old DJ HP Desktop and it has never given me any problems. Now all 4 of my Desktops are HP including 2 of them being awesome quad core systems and 2 HP Laptops. All i have to say is HP is solid, my newest Laptop with Windows 7 and LED 1080P screen is really phenomenal. It's become my DJ computer as well as my favorite way to watch Blu Rays.

Just gotta love brand loyalty -- considering they're all made in China for the most part, and branded with a different name... ;)

It's sorta like choosing a hard drive, based upon the name on it -- it doesn't really matter. Whether you get a bad one or not, has nothing to do with the brand name.

I don't know about that Rick, they may all come from the same place and credit it to whatever you like, luck if you want. But i've owned a lot of computers of multiple brands over the years and literally everyone of them has let me down and the HP's remain with 0 issues. The statistics alone say stick with the HP's.

It all depends on a few factors...

Who was on duty at QC that day, who packed the shipping containers, how many waves did the ship hit on the way over, and how did UPS/FEDEX/Name your receiving carrier handle the boxes.

The name makes no difference IMHO. I bought 2 HPs, and they both had issues. You bought some, and they worked fine.

Find the dude operating the crane that loads the shipping containers, and blame him... ;)

LOL, well we can attribute it to luck of buying computers traveling Calm seas but my HP's are solid. You're probably right though
Oh great... you just had to go and tell him he may be right (rolls eyes)

Now we'll never hear the end of it.... thanks a bunch.... ;)

A back lit keyboard would be awesome! I did find a cool gooseneck led light at Best Buy that plugs into a usb port and does a nice job of lighting the keys. It even has two different levels of brightness.

MSI Wind netbook for over a year now, and no issues at all with it.

2gb RAM
160 HD
XP

Well, once again , I have taken the Nestea Plunge. Yes it was time for me to replace my trustworthy Gateway Platinum Laptop. Purchased in 2004, it ran PCDJ for three years, then I switched format to the Denon HDN 2500. 8 weeks ago, I switched back to a lappy operation using the new Denon 6000.
Upon weeks of research, and debate, I have opted to switch to a MAC. wHAT????? Yeah, I've gone MAC. Incredibly expensive, incredibly contemporary, incredibly reliable!
What????
Yeah, if you look at the top DJ entertainers, to a person, they use MAC. I have been a PC guy since 1993. This is an incredible changeover for me, especially at my age. But, deep down, I know it is the right move.
My MAC Book Pro has the 2nd Generation Intel I-7 Quad Core Processor, a 500GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive, 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM , 17" Display, backlit keyboard, a 3 year parts & labor service plan, and it makes Kona Coffee every morning!
After much debate, I bit the bullet and parted with $3400 for this nucleus of my livelihood.
It will pair up with my Denon 6000 to deliver audio and video to the masses, and income to my checking account!

$3,400 IS A SERIOUS CHUNK OF CHANGE. I would almost consider maybe $1,200, but that would be the absolute top end of what I would spend. It's kind of like the Bose vs. regular speakers debate. Is an Apple laptop REALLY that much better? To me, no. If I can buy a windoze laptop with i7, hot graphics card, 500GB 7200rpm drive 4-6GB RAM etc.-for maybe $1,200-$1,500, then why would I spend $3400 on an Apple laptop? The Apple operating system is that much better? The DJ software for Apple is that much better? I'd rather buy 2 or 3 laptops for the price of one Apple. Hey, different strokes for different folks.

Yeah, but they have really nice packaging Wiz -- thick, rigid cardboard... :D

Some people will only buy a Cadillac, some a Lincoln, some a BMW -- the rest of us get to the same destination in a Chevy Malibu, or Ford Focus... ;)

Quite honestly, the new Dell Inspiron with 2nd generation I7 processor will most likely perform as well as the Apple Mac Pro comparably equipped. At 1/3 the price of the MAC, one has to wonder why so many DJs opt for the MAC.
It's simple. MAC is a better made computer. They do not make low end computers with low quality components. Its that simple.

Look at the Chevy Traverse and compare it with the Buick Enclave. Both built on the same GM Chassis. But that's where the similarities end.
They both have AWD, A/C, Cruise Control, Radios etc,.....but as the ad says..."Wouldn't You Really Rather Drive A Buick?
(Incidentally...I had to settle for the GMC Acadia)

Obviously, budget is always a concern when you need to purchase gear.
And PC is a fine way to go when it comes to a computer for the Digital DJ.

It is my hope and expectation that the grossly more expensive MAC Pro will provide me with a more dependable platform for Video and Music.
I make my living performing, and feel that an investment such as I have made will be worthwhile.
Time will tell!

I think everyone is overlooking the obvious and making unfair comparisons in the mac laptops. Almost every laptop mentioned has been a consumer level laptop. When comparing these models you can only look at the low end plastic macbook. If you are talking about the macbook pro you have to move up to the business class laptops across the board. Metal hinges, non-glare screens, 1-3 year warranties, built for reliability and tweaked for speed which comes at price increase penalty. Business laptops which are more comparable to a macbook pro are Lenovo Thinkpad T & W series, HP Elitebook series, Dell Latitude & Precision series, etc. The difference starts with the chassis - consumer typically equates to a flexible plastic chassis while business class is typically a rigid composite or metal chassis which doesn't droop when held by the corner. I have seen too many users walking from their office to a meeting room with their laptop running and flipped wide open a holding it by the corner of a screen and it just keeps working. Don't try that with a consumer laptop!

Well, big surprise !!!! I ordered my Mac Pro on Friday morning! Apple built it in China on Friday evening. They shipped it to California on Saturday.
It was delivered to me here in New Jersey at 3:30 PM today! Amazing!

And the speed of the computer-----incredible!
Running all 4 decks of Virtual DJ Pro simultaneously with video---only 2 green dots on the CPU Usage meter are lit!

Only one minor disappointment---couldn't transfer my playlists from the PC to the MAC--I will have to recreate them

nothing amazing there Steve.if you know what it takes to build any computer you probably would be shocked then.its just parts already built then they simply assemble them which takes not much time.shipping again is a breeze,UPS and Fedex are always flying in and out all over the world.if i live next door to you and sent a package to you via UPS next day service,it goes to central sorting hub in Kentucky then back to NJ for delivery the next morning.tons of crap are made in China so cargo planes go in and out all day all night long.the only thing that will take long is if a company sends freight by truck across the country to you.

PS. my mind just drifted on when i had dial up and it took all day and night to download a movie or transfer a large file.
