My wife and I were in OR this weekend and went out to sing with some friends. The bar had a ~150" projection screen, stage that could hold a 6 piece band and a room that could seat about 70 or more. The hostess used a single Bose Pro 8, Mackie 802 mixer (no effects) and a Shure BLX dual channel mic. She should have been able to get decent sound. However, she didn't.

An apparent regular tried helping her with the mixer but he was just randomly twiddling knobs and creating feedback. I offered to help and she looked relieved to have someone get the regular to step away. I got quickly killed the feedback and restored the vocal mids. As I went to sit back down the KJ thanked me.

The crowd was older consisting of mostly below average singers. There were not very discerning on sound quality. An older singer (~80) gets up and seems to have one of the best voices of the night. Unfortunately, he didn't project and you could barely hear him. The KJ doesn't raise his level. She runs to get a picture of him singing. About a minute into the song, I finally walk up to the mixer and raise his level. The audience starts clapping and the KJ (still taking pics) had no clue why. As I walked back to my seat, I got many high-fives from the crowd.

All-in-all, the crowd seemed to be having fun. However, it shocked me how oblivious this host was to sound quality. I have never seen a host so bad at listening.

Most KJ's and DJ's don't have a clue about sound and are worse with equalization. I always said the worst thing you can do is give a 31 band EQ to someone who doesn't know how to use it

Karaoke is not about most people being great singers. It's about people coming out to have a drink or 2, talk with people there and people having enough nerves to get up and sing.

I get that this person didn't know how to set things up properly. Did you offer to show this person how to set things up at the end or give them your phone number so they can call you when they need help with the setup?
