Yes... They are USB powered. I have a Seagate (similar), which I use for a music library backup. The Seagate also works great when I want to clone a drive. I pop out the 2.5" drive and insert a new one; clone it from another drive, then swap the backup drive back in. Acronis errors out when I try to clone to a drive in my USB Drive Craddle, but it always works with my Seagate enclosure. A little off topic... Sorry[emoji4].

I've never had any problem with my external USB drives... nothing caused by USB power anyway. I don't really use an external USB drive anymore, but it's more of a cabling issue than anything; trying to minimize cables[emoji4].

I prefer external powered devices - because if there is a USB 'power' issue or hiccup, anything that is drawing power from the machine is going down.

Yeh... even my controller will run on USB power, but I still use the AC adapter. No reason to take any chances.

What if there is a power hiccup? The laptop is running on battery so the external drive will still retain power as well.

USB is limited in the current available, but that shouldn't be an issue with a 2.5" drive. Many of the USB controllers run on bus power without issue.

Depending on usb load, this may or may not be true. A bunch of items drawing power could add up to a situation that draws too much power.

I carry a portable UPS / surge protector with me at all times - there's no guarantee that the laptop battery is great. This frees up USB power requirements and allows the devices to operate independent of each other. This also helps protect my stuff from possible nasty stuff coming from wall power. The UPS has more than enough battery for my laptop(s), drive(s) and a few other items. For the laptop, as long as the battery is good, I have dual redundancy with a UPS and the built in battery. Because I dont rely on usb for power (and only data), I'm less likely to experience a power related USB issue (limited current, system hiccup, etc).

My main machine is a Mac and is perfectly fine. My older Mac has had its battery replaced once already. I have an even older Sony Vaio that still rocks - but the battery is dead and the battery is around 60 bucks - for a few more dollars, I have a rock solid UPS that it (and other things) can run through.

All my source gear runs through a UPS system. Specially down here where a dog takes a leak on a power pole and BOOM!!! No power.

I have a Seagate that I use and the same here. I love it. I have a external HD that I can plug up. I use it for backup. I haven't used it in a while since the other one works great. Plus I have a few songs that need to be transferred to my backup HD.
 
rather buy the new 1TB SSD hard drives that are selling here..

I would too .. but here, a good one like the Samsung 850 Pro, is $450+. The 500Gb units are closing in on $150 (at least on sale) .. If a 1Tb drive comes up under $350 for our "Black Friday" sales event, I'm in.

They've had a few on sale for $140-$150 the past month or so, so there should be a few next month.

I wonder if I can replace the HD in my 2013 Hyundai Elantra with a bigger one. It came with a real small one.

Probably mechanically .. the issue would be if there was an operating system on that drive or some type of custom formatting. Maybe there is a YouTube video you could search for.

If there is an external USB port for a flash drive, you might be able to get the SSD to work using an external case.
