Was flight 93 shot down?

I have no idea why I am so wrapped up this thread.

Hey...who wants to start a thread about a certain grassy knoll? ;)

I think it's plausible that 93 was shot down. Really it's a matter of numbers, would you rather kill 200 people on a plane or let the plane hit a building and potentially kill thousands like what happened at the WTC? It may sound crass but if it was my call, I'd kill 200 to save possibly 1000s.

As for the hero story, quite frankly it's a good story. Here is one case where I wouldn't mind the USG covering this up. All hell would break loose if it was announced that the military engaged a commercial airliner over US soil. Why not put a nice spin on it and get something "good" out of 9/11. "Look we still have courageous heroes amongst us, this what America is about"

*cues God Bless America*

maybe i'm looking at it all wrong, but if the plane was shot down, i just don't think the government would go to such lengths to cover it up. I can't think of anything more justifiable that shooting down a plane that's been hijacked on the same day that 3 other hijacked planes have flown into buildings that could have killed 10,000 to 40,000 people.

If the U.S military was that sharp and that quick, and that accurate that they could track it that fast..send planes there fast enough to engage it..wait until it was over a rural area and then put it down, that is something they should want their enemies to know.

Also, there has been footage over the years of planes being shot down or planes that have come down from an explosion on board.....i don't see the similarity.

Is it possible?...well, i guess anything's possible...but since there are no facts to back it up...i'll put it in the Bigfoot file.

QUOTE]

I can agree that in light of what else happened that day, that it may have been necessary for the plane to be shot down.
Why would the government hide it?
Because as necessary as it may have been, there would still be outrage and backlash. To our knowledge, the government has never had to do something like that. This being the first time they would face it, I'm sure there was a lot of debate and calculation by the government on how to deal with this on a public level.
They may have concluded that since there was some evidence that the passengers were about to take their own action that it was best to just let the public think that. It certainly is an easier sell that shooting it down.

There are lots of wild theories flying around out there about everything that happened on that day, from the extreme idea that the entire thing was orchestrated by the government. I find that one hard to swallow.

There would have to be way too many people involved to keep a lid on something like that.
Some of the other theories that abound are more along the lines of the government didn't orchestrate it, but knew it was going to happen and allowed it.
Still pretty sinister, but at least they didn't have to be the villians and it would be easier to contain all the slimy details.

I sat and watched this all unfold on CNN as it happened and just watched in disbelief of what I was seeing.

I tend to believe that it truly was a terrorist act and that our government was as off guard as was everyone else.

If there is anything being covered up (and I bet there is) it is my theory that it is more along the lines of them covering up details of how they reacted because there were probably several mistakes made in all the confusion. Maybe there were some bad judgement calls made too.

Very few if any government officials and responders were at all prepared for the magnitude, the chaos, and the fact that it was all unfolding live in a time when information can be delivered in so many forms to so many people at once.

In the years to come, people will have remorse or feel like the threats of government reprisals have subsided and then they will step forward. We will get to hear details that were likely witheld as far as all of the evebts of the day.
Until then, the theories will fly which is a good thing. It will keep questions alive.

Our military is that sharp, that quick and that accurate. And generally speaking our enemies know it.

The average fighter aircraft is at least 3 times faster than any commercial aircraft (including the Concorde, which only had a top speed just over Mach 1). The air to air missles and radar systems on even an older fighter, like the F-14, can lock on to a target (especially one as large as a commercial airliner) that is way out of the pilot's visual range.

The Government knew where that aircraft was because they evacuated all federal buildings in DC, because of a rogue aircraft heading towards the capital (which the media reported as it was happening), something like 15-20 min before it crashed in PA. At that time we already had intercepters in the air.

It's true about our Air Force and Navy fighter jets. Those planes are the fastest, most technically advanced machines in the entire world. Most people outside the military aren't aware of America's air power superiority because most people haven't seen it.

One of the older riddles about Flight 93: How come the plane crashed to begin with? As I understand, there were what, two terrorist hijackers aboard? Supposedly, those guys subdued the flight crew with box cutter knives. That's all the weaponry they had.

Back in the passenger cabin you've got a rather large number of ticked off people, one of whom calls home on a cell phone to relay the situation. This is where the "Let's roll" comment came from.

Surely, all those ticked off people who knew their lives were in the balance could have overcome a couple of amateur terrorist hijackers with nothing more than box cutter knives in their hands. Adrenaline can do some amazing things.

Surely, someone could have sat in the pilot's seat and kept that plane aloft long enough to contact an air traffic controller somewhere for instructions on what to do next.

Herein lies the riddle. These are legitimate questions and they have yet to be addressed to my knowlege.

its funny how so many civilians think they know the answers................... Thanks Fred

The thing is it takes one to step forward. In a case like that I think I would step up and face anyone, Ive never backed down from a good fight. But at the time knowing what they knew that was going on in NY and DC who knows what thoughts were going through thier mind and the mind can do funny things to you. It can make a hero of a coward and a coward of a hero

Its hard to say unless you are faced with the situation

.

from most accounts, they did overcome the hijackers in the isle....the hijacker flying the plane tried to sway the plane back and forth to stop them...but once he realized they were going to get in...he rammed it into the ground.

he rammed it into the ground.
Alledgedly.

I have my doubts now for sure. If the terrorists knew they were going to die anyway why would they abandon the mission? like that?

I think all that took part in the atempt to overrun the cockpit are heros, no doubt about it.

If the government did shoot it down why can't they fess up?
Just my thoughts......

"What did the president know and when did he know it?" ;)

no I was referring to Ice Station Zebra as a fraudulent story as well as Capricorn one but thanks for your addition my friend. Hope your feeling better and out of the hospital please share whats going on with your family here.

just to clarify my earlier statements....I totally respect our military and the amazing job they do. They are truly the best in the world....
what I mean was that i don't think ANYONE could have anticipated and reacted that fast....even our incredible military.

As it has been mentioned there are many possibilities including shooting down the plane. I've read the stuff posted on the sites referred from the links on this thread. Debris could have started falling from the plane in the flight because the fuselage and wings could have been put through maneuvers that weren't within the design limits of the aircraft. This could be small parts from the wings, engine cowls, etc.

Let's remember that the bastards flying the plane had no experience flying a jet that size and even with your best PC flight simulators you'll never get the feel of a large jet. If people where over powering them, the idiot flying the plane thought he could rattle them around the cabin and control them, maybe he lost control and could not gain it back and therefore crashed (also remember that maybe some of the control surfaces where already damaged) so he thought he could knock the passengers out and then proceed to his target. I think the passengers are heroes and tried to gain the upper hand.

And finally the other possibility, maybe a plane launched an air to air missile and brought the jet down. It is a tough decision for who ever issues the order and for the pilot who executes it. As we know the press has no limits on what they report and how they report it and sometimes the pushy nature of reporters trying to be the next best thing can lead to tragedies. If it was a military pilot who executed the order I think the Air Force would keep this information confidential. I believe the pilot may be another victim with having to carry the weight of shooting the airliner down for the rest of his life.

And you know the reporters will bug you, accuse you, etc. to try to get a reaction and then go into a feeding frenzy destroying what's left of the pilots life. We have to realize that by sacrificing the passengers on flight 93 maybe thousands were saved by not allowing the aircraft to proceed to it's target.

This is MHO, and I still believe the passengers, crew, NYFD, NYPD and civilians are heroes and will always be remembered as such.
