OK, on one thread a discussion developed around weed that probably caused the loss of Mike Valentino. To me, Mike is an icon in Karaoke and I highly value what he has to say.

Honestly, there are some subjects that one should not take a light-hearted approach to and drugs is one. The discussion in that thread condoned the use of weed.

I don't know what should be done in this situation or even if anything needs to be done. I just think we need to ba a little more careful about the subjects we choose.

Tom,

Best I can tell, ODJT has never been about censorship.

Some people have bad days, and get their panties wrinkled over something that wouldn't have bothered them yesterday.

Remember when somebody had a bad day, and wanted political threads banned?

Of course, he likes them ;)

Remember a couple of yours, and a couple of mine?

We all have our bad days, but to limit discussion, is just wrong, IMHO...

Rick, please re-read what I wrote above; particularly the last line.

I do get my knickers twisted from time to time as do most of us. When it is a controversial subject that I ammgoing to blast somebody on I put my reply in Word and come back to it thrice. If I still feel the same way, I post it.

Problem with that, is you lose the spontaneity of the conversation.

If we were standing side by side, you wouldn't have time to rehearse your words, or edit them...

No harm done IMHO, as if someone doesn't like the company they're keeping, they know where the door is. We all pretty much know what each other is about here, and we take each other with a grain of salt, so to speak.

You could of substituted anything for the word 'pot', and gotten the same response, I think...

I think we are doing just fine....

Personally, I think the post in question was tongue in cheek. At least I took it that way. :dontknow: Would it have been much different if he said I spend my tips on Heineken and Bacardi?

No one is advocating the use of drugs and/or alcohol. We're DJs we work in environments where this stuff is around. Some partake in it, some don't. It's only natural for these topics to come up in conversation because we're around it.

Perspective

You know, I guess you could say that I spend my tips at restaurants, eating bloody rare steaks. We at ODJT are well aware of the dangers of heart disease, which I believe is the number one killer in Canada (USA too?--either way, it's up there).

Maybe we should save ourselves (and the health care system) by making the consumption of bloody rare steaks illegal.

But DRUGS are bad--we sidetrack from other--STILL REAL--killers. Not that drugs are good--I'm just saying that we might focus too much on certain things and not enough on others.

Here's another example: "Global Warming" is such a big issue. Protesters everywhere are quick to condemn something (like a new factory) because it contributes to "Global Warming".

Nobody has ever died of "Global Warming".

Just something to think about...I guess...perhaps...eh?

While I understand Tom's concerns, I also have a responsibility to all of the members here. I cannot in good concience permit the few to dictate to the many. ODJT is growing because of things we do. It's also growing because of things we don't do. :)

Censorship is a Pandora's box and not a thing I wish to become involved with. If we permit one person or group to censor, we set a precedent. There's no turning back from there. Besides, if we did that we'd be no better than the sites we left.

ODJT doesn't define "illegal" nor "detrimental to society". That's not our purpose. I don't think we should attempt to define any of that.

Yup, some topics and threads may border on the inane. That's why we have the Pub forum. The Pub is open to members only. If a group of friends, coworkers or whatever want to chat about drugs over beers in a pub, should the pub manager tell 'em to change the subject? If it was me, I wouldn't.

Thoughts?

Fixed this up for you Fred. I'm not a moderator, so this is the best I could do..

good one Chuck. My view is this. I certainly would be upset if I couldnt wear my Fur coat to Mobile Beat cause it shouts out Pimp Daddy which reeks of illegal activity (see pimp).

I really don't think we have a problem with the context of threads in general. Oh yes sometimes these things get sideways.........I don't think anyone is advocating drug use here, as Dan said it sounded tongue in cheek.

But then again I made it through the Sixties here in California. Did the college scene in the San Fran Bay Area. What the hell could I remember anyway???

The thing is we as a society are choosy about our drugs. If I was to talk about alcohol, Caffeine or Nicotene no one would get bent out of joint (excuse the pun) but if you mention weed....

I vote we stop talking about all drugs from Asprin up

I am in the minority here but I agree with Tom.

I know I had a hard time with a thread that talked about illegal drug use.

I got slammed by most that responded. I still think it was a thread that should have been deleted.

I noted in that thread where I put a link to provacative photos about the AI girl and it was removed. But talk about illegal drug use was allowed to continue.

I for one would rather not have the threads about drugs allowed to stay but it is not my board.

I have just seen things that are legal and get out of hand get stopped but talking about drug use gets to stay.

That is my rant. In now way is this a slam to anyone who uses illegal drugs. I don't think you should be doing that but it is my opinion.

Thank you for your time.

Karl

I also am very against the use or the taunting the use of illegal drugs of any kind. I don't feel threads that support illegal activities should be allowed to continue on this forum.
I did not see this thread as doing that, but that's just my opinion.

This was a great thread

I came in this morning to see how the response to this topic would be. I really thought we needed to bring this out into the open. If I ticked Toqer off for "my" response, it is my opinion, and that is it. To see that the topics can include information about ourselves, drugs, sex, personal stuff, leaves the poster wide open to interpretation now doesnt it? It seems we have all been at fault of that now havent we? I decided to push the envelope when Toqer decided to push the issue. I have nothing but respect for this site and most the members on it. Freedom of speech is there for all of us, including me. I tried to make light of Toqers post about weed, and he took it personally, I wish him well. I wish all of us in an industry that is not doing very well right now, and takes many hits by the entertainment industry as it does, does not need anymore ammunition to bring it down. I remain optomistic, in this day and age, Karaoke will be around for a long time to come...Let us hope so..

What kills more? tobacco, weed or alcohol.......

What tears apart society's fabric? tobacco, weed or alcohol.......

Why is OK to get blistering drunk on JD yet....yet not OK to get buzzed on weed.

How is weed different than tobacco and let's be honest; which is more addictive.

The hypocrasy gets to me more than anything.

I know it's illegal, but really so shouldn't alcohol and cigarettes...right?

things such as this makes me consider other things like if drinking and driving is illegal why do most bars have a bigger parking lot than their capacity?

1) I agree thet Mike has a passion for karaoke, and value his input. However, I believe that, regarding the thread in question, he was the provocateur. Disagreeing with someone's view is no reason to post negative personalizations or a mocking or insulting post- which he did. I will truly miss him if he leaves, but I don't believe he had a reason to be so sensitive- unless he had something happen in his life that I'm unaware of. We all have the option to either skip, ignore, or post a non-personalized opinion.

2) I would have to disagree here. No need to be careful. If a post offends, just utilize the options above. If one is thin-skinned, then this business-completely involved with the public, is probably not the best choice.
