I'm updating my WIN 7 laptop to

Amazon.com: 2019 MSI GF75 Laptop 17.3" 120Hz FHD Gaming Computer| 9th Gen Intel Hexa-Core i7-99750H Up to 4.5GHz| 32GB DDR4 RAM| 512GB PCIE SSD + 1TB HDD| GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB| Backlit Kewyboard| WIN 10

Probably a bit overkill, but I can now do more tasks at the same time.

Not trying to be funny here. I have been using the same 2 laptops to DJ for years. One is for backup. It used to be my main laptop. What is the reason to upgrade your laptop? Is it because you put them online sometimes? I don't put mine online. That's what I have a PC for.

As I recall, your laptops (at least one) is not that old.

If your laptops never see any external data, never see new music and never connect to anything (among other things), then you don't need to upgrade your laptop(s). If you ever connect external devices or data to them, update your music, and/or EVER connect to any online and/or network (even local network), then you need to update various things and you need to be protected. If your OS is out of date, then you need to upgrade it. Modern OS typically need modern hardware to run properly. You also need an Antivirus package. Modern DJ packages typically require modern hardware to run properly.

For me I don't use my laptop for anything more than to DJ with. Well I play a game of Monopoly. That's it. If I have to get online I use my tablet for that.

Are you saying you never put new music on your laptop? Are you saying you never connect it to anything (external hard disk)? Are you saying you never connect it to hardware (a controller)? Are you saying you never connect to any network? If you answer no to any one of these, then you're only fooling yourself.

Does Monopoly need an Internet connection?

I use a portable 2TB HD. I don't put any music on my laptop itself. The Monopoly game isn't online. I just play it from my laptop. I connect my laptop to a controller and that's it. My main laptop has VDJ 8 on it and the backup laptop has 7 I think. I keep it simple. I don't use VDJ for anything special. I don't show videos and if I need to get a song to play that's what the hot spot and tablet is for.

I did say ANY connections - and you connect your 2TB hard drive (which gets connected to other computers) - and therein, lies a big issue. If your laptop connects to this hotspot, then you have even more issues. If your machines wifi is enabled, then you are a target - how big a target is the question.

Going back to point 1 - your external hard disk (which connects to other devices) presents an issue to this machine that you never update.

All I can say is so far so good. I don't connect my hotspot to my laptop. I use it for my tablet.

You can say so far so good - until it stops working .. all because you took no actions to protect your stuff and yourself. A failure to plan is a plan to fail.

Can you guess what the #1 statement is of people with infected machines, crashed machines and/or lost data? They all say the same thing as you do - until the issue happens, then they cry - as will you. At that point, they almost expect people to come running to save them - from their own mistakes, when they had all the time and opportunity to correct it and help prevent issues from occurring - or at the least, be prepared for when they happen. Here's another opportunity for you to learn and advance - and as demonstrated (and expected), you refuse.

All I can say is I hope you backed up that hard drive. For some people it's not if it's when

My last computer purchase came down to needs, not brands. Here are some of the requirements I had:

Ports: 2x USB-C and 2x USB-3, HDMI (full sized) - I HATE carrying adapters and hubs for mini-sized ports
Battery: More than 12 hours of realistic life
Weight: Under 3.5 lbs
Security mount: Kensington or other lock compatibility (so I can leave it unattended but relatively secure)
Screen size: >13.3 in.
Touchscreen: Yes
2-in-1 screen: Yes (mostly for use on cramped airplanes)
Storage type: SSD

Once I got through those, I ended up with a Dell 7400 2-in-1 with 78WH internal battery. I can go an entire day without plugging it in which is really nice. It is not as light as my 13.3" Lenovo but it is actually smaller overall.

A friend of my wife sent me her 15.6” HP Touchscreen i5 laptop to recover the pics and docs off the hard drive because the PC had a virus and a hardware problem. The laptop had obviously been dropped many times, as the case was a mess. I recovered all her docs, pics, and music, and I repaired the computer by replacing the cooling fan. The PC would not start up because the fan was dead. Nothing I could do about the broken case though. The back of plastic case literally crumbled when I tried to open it up. I could get her another back case part for $45, but she already bought a replacement laptop, so she didn’t want the broken one back. I can easily resolve the virus issue and fix the case, then I’d have a pretty nice laptop for $45. Or I might see if I can use the innards and build a DJ system out of it. The touchscreen would be much larger than the tablet I’m currently using. It might be a fun DIY project.😊
