What criteria do you use to determine if a song is Rap or Hip Hop? These are two separate Genres, some people erroneously lump them in as one.

If I can stand it, it's Hip-Hop (though I do like Eminem).
Rap is talking. Hip hop has singing. That's pretty much my determination.

I also think it speaks volumes that most Rap artists "need" multiple "featured" artists to actually complete a song.
Normally the answer we hear is rap is a style of music and hip hop is more of a culture.
Hip Hop" is the name of the whole movement; it's a way of thinking, acting, living. It's what is new and cool, different and "hip". "Rap" is one of the genres of music that come under the heading of Hip-Hop. Rap is poetry, the telling of a story, in rhyme, with "beats"--it sometimes has music and sometimes is on its own (as in "free-styling").
So does anyone want to take a stab at the list of 10 songs above to determine what is Rap, Hip Hop etc?

In rap you can see more hard edge and hardcore lyrics, whereas hip- hop has a more feel. it has more of a groove and crossover appeal.
I don't think much about it. I tag songs as rap or hip hop based on a personal criteria that means something to ME and the way I play. (Typical of a white guy! )
In my library songs tagged as Hip Hop have a rhythm and sound that inspires a dance reaction.
Songs tagged as Rap either lack that rhythm - or the rhythm is undermined/subverted by the lyrical content making it less play worthy.
By and large a song tagged as rap in my library is for radio or your iPod - not the dance floor.
