That's why I subscribe to PrimeCuts. They edit that problem away (for the most part). But to answer your question; It depends on the situation.
For young crowds 17 and under, I vote yes, for 18+, it depends on the situation and clientele.
I subscribe to the same (common sense).
FWIW, I regularly play clean versions of songs unless specifically asked otherwise by the client. I have no idea who is at my show. If you are playing explicit materials, that may be the image you leave with your guests.
If you're asking if I'd rather have a clean or explicit library, I would prefer clean all the way.

I don't even bring explicit, explicit stuff anymore .. it's kept on my server. I bring weak explicit songs (a$$, bitch, etc. not edited), but those are played only when there is no one under 18 in the crowd (bars, etc.).

I stopped buying "new" albums years ago. All my "current" music comes from Prime Cuts. These are clean(er) versions of songs. That's all I have to play. I also delete everything from Prime Cuts in the Urban category...if the song doesn't make it to CHR or some other chart....I don't have it to play.
That said, I have not played "Blurred Lines" and won't without a request from the person signing the check.

I get songs from iDJPool .. they have both versions .. explicit and radio friendly. It's just easier with the ftp client to take down everything. Then when I pull them into my working environment, I remove most songs with the [explicit] tag .. If I don't have them, I don't need to lie that I can't play them.

I voted yes. My card says clean cuts only and I live by it. If you want it dirty I am not your DJ, no matter what you want to pay. I am sure you can find someone who will do whatever it takes to make money.
I don't understand the push to make TV, movies and music so dirty. Go to the movie, unless you are watching a kids movie you have to hear the F word over and over. TV, language and the gay push. Music, well I don't have to tell you guys what is going on there.

Nope. Personally, I feel it's not a DJ's responsibility to play politics, determine morals or censor music. If we did, no one would've ever heard of Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Motown artists. All of 'em faced censorship from radio station owners at one time or other. For all the good it did.
Believe it or not, as clean-cut as Pat Boone was, he had his detractors. Yet, he looked tame when compared with Chuck Berry dancing on the piano. And so it went.
That said, the under-18 common sense logic surely applies. Clean versions of popular tracks are made for school gigs and other venues where the raw versions are inappropriate.

I can tell you that my son grew up with the lyrics (along with all other crazy shit he seen/sees ... but he was taught right from wrong, good morals, how to make decisions based on his own thoughts and actions and not others, ect. For whatever happens in society, can be counter-acted with good parenting. Lack of lies the problem, imo.
Well, we are all products of our respective environments. I think that younger, impressionable people will repeat derogatory terms or swear words if they hear it from any source, including music.
But social behavior can and should be guided by parents, teachers and other responsible adults whom youngsters respect.
I agree with both of you, however, we also need to acknowledge that Peer pressure among the young ones may play a big role in whether or not the good morals taught at home take root.

I pray hard for the teens in todays world. Bombbarded by what is on the net, movies, tv and music they have a tremendous amount of rude and immorale media put in thier face/ears daily. Parents and teachers can do a lot, but the teens have it pretty ruff.
My nephew was the validictorian of his class in 2010. My daughter was just getting ready to go into the HS he was leaving. He came over to see me privately one night and asked me to please not send my daughter to the school he just graduated from, to send her to the local christian school. I was able to do that an am so happy I did.
The problem at my nephews HS wasn't teachers, it was the bad students got so many get out of jail free cards because of the pure hell thier parents raised with the school system , threatning law suits. When you've got more lawyers and special organizations trying to help keep the low lifes in school than you have supporting the school system, then we all know what happens.
Parent envolvement in what thier kids are looking at and listening to is the key. So far I have been lucky with my daughter, I have always been very involved in her life, and I have taken her to church and not sent her to church. My mother twisted my arm to become a Christian at an early age, guess what I found out later, I really wasn't a Christian. I never pushed my daughter, I was just there for her and she is now a freshman in college, a great young Christian who cares about people and she doesn't have time for rude or bad music of video.
I don't know where or why the movement to make america so filthy happened, but I WILL NOT BE ONE TO CONTINUE IT NO MATTER WHAT YOU PAY ME!
I have spent almost half my life in foreign countries, I have hundreds of friends all over the world, the biggest thing I hear from them (men of many religions and backgrounds) is "what is happening to society in america and why do the people who propogate all this filth have more rights than those that resist it".
I am open to your thoughts on why all this filth is main stream and starting to be considered normal. I can tell you that people from other countries think we are becoming a bad society.

Dayum, that was a powerful article. I have always believed that the chap had an unique talent. He used his songs and words to describe the dysfunction that he endured while growing up. Bitterness and resentment dominated his thinking but deep inside was a beating warm heart. Blokes like that can have a great influence on people with their change of hearts. There are some artists now who have vowed to clean up their act and they are doing it. We need to support more artists like them. What we do as adults is one thing but what we condone and teach to the youngsters is an entirely different matter.
