Even at the price your partner paid, it's not worth buying a single speaker unless he plans to use it in the house for practice sessions.

I guess if it was close to the frequency response of whatever tops were used, it might make an OK center fill speaker and without a sub, might provide a little more juice in that part of the spectrum ..but the high end / midrange quality will be suspect (unless it is low-passed to only use the 15s).
A Single Speaker has many uses. Isn't there a bunch of folks on here that use a single speaker for Ceremonies! I have a single Powered Speaker that I use as a Monitor, extra area and Singer's Monitor for Karaoke. As long as you get a Mono Feed to it then all is well. The truth be known with so many speakers being placed so close together in some setups that I have seen, they sound as one, what is the difference in this case?
Dual 15"s have their purpose. I have seen them used very successfully stacked on Subs on top of Stages for Live Sound use. I don't think it is a good choice for DJs use.
I agree Houstonute! For a dj application they really won't cut it but for a band it will work. Bands are mainly up on elevated stages while dj's have to elevate the speakers with stands.
I use a single 12" as a monitor, for cocktail hour and for ceremony. But you wont see me dragging no big old dual 15 incher to cover that stuff.
I get that a lot of DJ's hate double 15 speakers. I bought the 2 Yamaha Dual 15's because at the time I didn't have any subs back then. The bass in them did me a fine job. He basically don't have any speakers that work. So him getting these will do him well as he's basically just getting started. He's a good DJ but not the polished professionals others on here are. I told him my dual Yammies will beat out that JBL. It was a good buy for him as he doesn't have plenty of money to spend on speakers. He's 22 years old and still learning a lot at this time.
No hate .. it's just that most double 15 tops don't sound "balanced" .. they tend to have slightly overpowering bass and limited mids. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I've heard $250 versions and $2000 versions and they were all consistent. These lower end units (TR, SR, JRX) don't have the build for rugged use .. the particle board (MDF) construction chips easily and hates moisture.
But ... Many DJs liked them because, as you said, they worked fairly well without subs. The dual 12" units need a sub, but the smaller drivers do a better job with the mids.
Steve here are some 2 x 15" you may like. The common theme between them is that they all have a dedicated mid range driver.
