Awesome dude, its really great DJ8 is really good and i like its new features also and i like the idea of sandbox.
Canute I (and many VDJ users) are waiting for over a year for this to gestate into a new baby. It is going to be a killer software and may take a few away for your favorite software. They have added some of its features to version 7 so we have had some of our cravings satisfied. In its present form VDJ is still the most popular DJ/VJ/karaoke program out there, so when this drops they will gain even more market share.
DJ software to me is like owning a car. They all will take you from point A to point B. It depends on what extras you want in the Vehicle. Do you want a sunroof so your chick can stick her head out the top and let her hair blow or just a plain sedan? Do you want XM Radio or will just a regular AM/FM with CD suffice? We can also say a Chevy or Ford is the most popular vehicle on the road more so than a Rolls Royce but as we all know not everyone can afford a Rolls Royce. My point is that it does not matter. There are some who say Traktor is too complicated for them, so to me it is not the fault of the software, it is the inexperience of the operators out there.
I don't see many novices using Traktor but I do see many of them using Serato and VDJ which is far easier to use. So popularity does not necessarily make something better. Most of these VDJ users are bedroom DJs anyway from what I have seen. Maybe in your area it is different, I don't know. Each person has to choose what is right for them. There are changes coming along in Traktor. To me the only thing lacking in Traktor is that it does not play all Video. You can play Karaoke Discs through it but not the Files. Other than that it has tons of bells and whistles. Have you ever used Traktor? I have used VDJ and I still have a version on my first Laptop which I will eventually upgrade.
Yes I have used Tkaktor... I was introduced to VDJ when it came with my first controller, I upgraded to the pro version and liked it. I have used Serato Scratch live and itch, Traktor, Mixvibes and Mixxx. All are capable software but having the flexibility to use VDJ on Mac or windows or with any controller, audio interface and have it mix video without having to purchase another plugin keeps me using it. Oh yea did i mention the upgrades are free to pro users and the software is internet friendly and if you want it has a great music/video/karaoke subscription service. One more advantige it is touch screen friendly so your touch screen PC or laptop can be your controller.
When doing Karaoke I prefer to use a separate software. Having DJ software and Karaoke software combined is not a good idea to me. If that software crashes I have now lost two parts of my show. If my Karaoke Software crashes I can continue uninterrupted with the DJ Software until i fix the other and vice versa. Its called specialty tools. One for each task. Same goes for DSPs and Driverracks etc. They may be great but if they go down look how many components are lost. If the Driverrack goes down where would you find an EQ, Crossover, Limiter etc to instantly fill in? Again, to each his own.
I hear you Canute but..... I have had VDJ crash on me once ever in a gig and it was because my hardware (laptop) overheated. I now have a laptop stand that keeps my laptop cool.
I also doubt that you bring a separate laptop for each piece of software so if one software crashes you sill have to reboot or start the other software so downtime would be about the same., most audio software can not be running when another is running. As for me I always bring a backup in case of crashes (a tablet with appropriate music for the event I am doing giving me time to reboot if necessary.

Actually, I run my karaoke software and DJ software at the same time.
Trying to find one that does it all properly. The newest versions of VDJ seem to have most of the karaoke features I need (who's up next, crawl, etc.), so I may upgrade to the pro version. That and the karaoke software I have doesn't support ASIO drivers, so it wont work with my new Rane MP25 .. and I don't want to keep bringing a second audio interface.

My Laptops are usually on a stand with Bottoms exposed so the cooling is not an issue. I no longer take an extra laptop with me (Except when I am doing Karaoke) because the Pioneer MEP 7000 can take over duty fully without the need for a Laptop. It has its own onboard Soundcard, Mixing abilities, Dual Decks and ports for my Music Library on an External hard drive. As a precaution, whenever I am doing an important Event with a special Playlist as a Guide, I duplicate that playlist on the MEP. I can adjust that playlist on the MEP as I see fit during the night by moving around the songs or deleting/adding songs. I am lucky, I have not had a Laptop go down on me at a Gig yet.
BTW on my Laptop I do run at least 3 Software simultaneously.

Karaoke Software that goes out via onboard Soundcard
Windows Media Player (With Audio Muted) for Slide shows and Funny Video Clips.
That is one of the benefits of Custom Ordering a laptop with specially selected Software and Hardware. In essence, the laptop has been designed to do these tasks and more simultaneously.

While I agree with most of what you said, I have to stop you dead in your tracks. I own 2 V7's, an NS7, and NS72, and I can say that it's not entirely an operator issue here, trakktor simply does NOT support motorized platters in ANY way whatsoever, so I have NO choice but to use Serato or VDJ with them.
In this case, I've personally married myself to a digital controller that has motorized controllers by my own choice.
I also own NS6 and 4 Trak which only 4 Trak works with trakktor, but I want spinning platters, so while trakktor may be the rolls royce (in some people's opinion), it does not work with my corvette controllers.
I realize it is my choice to stick with those controllers, but sometimes the software choice is driven by the hardware that is supported by it.....not by the operator's choice....per say.
I only post this because the broad stroke to paint doesn't cover this scenario.
Just to clarify so another argument does not ensue, the "operator error" to which I was referring has nothing to do with any kind of platters, motorized or not. That was not the issue so let me set that straight. As a fact, there are some on here and some who I know personally who will tell you that they want the simplest DJ software as possible to use. They are not interested in scratching, beat mixing or any of the other stuff that higher level DJs utilize. So once again, my statement has nothing to do with Platters.

That has nothing to do with figuring it out. I can figure out most software (I used to teach programming and have written software). The issue is ease of access to functionality, and that differs greatly among software products and differs amongst the needs of the individuals here.
I have said I only use the bare fundamentals .. Start/Stop/Pause/Simple Tempo control/Cueing/Simple Looping. I don't need waveform control or beat matrixing or effects or filtering (maybe a dropout here or there but I can also do that in my mixer) or what have you.
But I would like access to my iTunes libraries and karaoke file playing (plus karaoke management) so I don't HAVE to go back and forth between apps. Video is also nice, though I don't use it much as I don't typically have a monitor/projector with me except for karaoke and I don't have a video pool.
So .. my search continues .. VDJ Pro is next to play with. PCDJ doesn't do it and I didn't care for their Karaoki module. I like my karaoke software (Just Karaoke 2), but it frustrates me that they don't support ASIO sound.

Fair enough, I just wanted to be clear that some choices are defined by the hardware used and may not have other choices....vs those that can't/won't/haven't used other software for whatever their reasoning may be.
