I got a call the other day from a lady I did a birthday party for last year. She wanted to book for her birthday again this year.
she asked if I had the ability to recall the songs I played that night. I said I did. She said she wanted the exact songs I played last year, in the exact same order. She said the party was so much fun and the music I played was perfect.

i explained to her that the reason it worked last year is because I was able to read the crowd well..was only maybe 50-60 people. I said if the exact same people show up at the exact same time, and they are in the same mood at the same time, it may work.

i suggested that we use that list as a great starting point but keep it flexible as needed.

she agreed.

it was a nice compliment, but that's the first time anyone's ever requested that

What odd requests have you received?

I have to tell people this often (the people that rebook or book off another show they were at). The way I say it, which yours is spot on, is - On any 2 given days, you could have the same exact people in the same exact room for the same exact hours and play the same exact songs in the same exact order. One would fail and one be a complete success. There can be many variables to an event's success / failure.

Yours was nice and you handled it very well. Kudos to you. I had one this week that's not as nice. Bride is scheduled for 4/20 and paid in full. This week she sends over a "Play exactly what I tell you and no guest requests" timeline. She's even got the dinner hour as all must-plays (and in order) and for dance set she's even specified certain versions. I'm sitting there, shaking my head and finally look at the schedule. Hooray! She's scheduled for one of my other DJs! I already sent the list on to him and he's got a great attitude. Personally, I LOATHE those micro-managing clients and wouldn't have signed her, had I an inkling that she'd be like this (she was nothing like this in our initial communications).

Again, attaboy Scott.

Rick I agree with you and I wouldn't want to an event for a client like that. My question to you is that when you first met the bride and was discussing her wedding day, did you talk at all about the music she wanted played at her wedding?

I only meet F2F with a prospect if they request it (15%). This one was done over the web and I exchanged a couple of emails prior to booking. She gave no indication of being demanding until just recently. If I can sniff them out up-front, I'll usually make a run at turning them, like Scott did. If they stick to their guns, I punt it unless it's a hard to fill date.

Scott.
Too bad you don't RECORD all your shows. You coulda set-up a system, hit PLAY, and gone home!
(and still got the same amount of money)

Rick.
Since you dodged a bullet on your micro-managing bride...
are you gonna help your DJ "school" the girl on how it really works, or just let him handle the problem all by himself?
(since he is working under your good name)

His wife works in my office (she works with him on my gigs) so I spoke with her about it (and emailed him). Told them to just "do exactly what the bride said to do" but then told her "It can go one of two ways. It'll either go really easy or she'll become a zilla halfway through and drive you crazy all night." All I care about is that he executes the timeline, exactly. A bad online review in that case can work in my favor.

There is a clause in my contrat that speaks to this. Plus we we talk about hiring us this is something we also talk about.

While I don't "record" the shows, the computer has it all saved, so I could just turn the music on, go over to Cedar Point, which is about 3 minutes from there, and then come back:).

I found the song list yesterday. I'll post the list later
