Leave the platters as they are. That smooth finish is for a reason. I made a wax paper cut out to put between the felt mat and the Platter. It makes for little friction when holding down the vinyl. If you paint it that may not happen so easily.Progress.... Not sure if i want to paint the platters or not.

If you are a Turntablist you would know that when you put your fingers on the Vinyl to hold it in place or scratch, you want the platter to keep spinning freely without restriction. The Torque/RPM will not affect the wax paper and felt if your hand is not on the vinyl. The first thing a DJ does when they buy a turntable such as Technics 1200, is to discard the rubber mat. I have a Pair, I purchased my pair back in the 70s when they first came out. The Technics are Direct drive!I don't understand? The connection between the vinyl, the mat and the platter should be as high in friction (i.e. no movement) as possible. You should be able to grab the edge of the platter and manipulate it with the vinyl following suit. Wax paper will break that connecton and the vinyl will not move in sync with the platter.
Same with playing for listening as well. You want the vinyl to be manipulated directly by the platter and therefore should have a solid high-friction connection.

Read carefully! It would NOT slip while it is playing! You do WANT it to slip when you are cueing it up. When using Turntables, you generally don't need a Controller as the Turntables act as the Controller. Long before Digital, laptops etc we have been using the wax paper and felt to cue up Vinyl. This is where the name "Slip Cue" was born. You can hold the vinyl in place and release on a particular note to match the other song on the other platter? I am surprised you don't know about this.Unless you are using a controller and time code, I would still think that any slippage would be detrimental to the sound. If you are simply using the turntable as a controller and not the sound source, then you may be correct.
And I know the Technics are DD .. I used to own 2 of them.
