My partner is looking to buy this for the business.

He'll get no respect from me and in case you missed it, he proudly proclaimed on Sid's board how he stole equipment. And in case you've forgotten, he's now scamming his former employer, claiming disability.

He is a self-proclaimed thief and a liar. I wish he wasn't polluting the forum except it does provide target-rich material for taking pot shots.
You watch your mouth and tell the truth. I didn't steal anything. It was stuff that was put out that nobody wanted! The people who put it out were moving and weren't going to take it with them. As for my disability it's not a scam. I found out around February or March of last year I have bulging disk in my back. That's why I finally retired early. I had nights where I might have gotten may be 1/2 hour of sleep. I would be so tired I couldn't make it to work.

I hate what I had to find out from doctors that there is nothing they can do to fix it. Just pray that you don't get the same condition one day. I had times when I've had to stop driving and get out to stretch for a few minutes so I could continue to drive. That includes while I've been playing and standing up for some hours then being in a lot of pain at the end of the night or when ever the time of the event. I don't know why I posted this. You're going to believe what you want to believe. Have a great day sir.

How much are you charging to have video for this upcoming gig? Second you obviously you do not understand having subs on a system do not make things louder necessarily but help make it sound better. I can setup my 2 tops and two subs in my house and play at a nice volume and have it sounding great. That’s why they have the little volume control on the mixer. It doesn't always need to be all the way up.
Trust me I know that. I just know even when you do that in certain situations it will still be too much. That's not very often that you'll run into such a thing but there are those times. Then there are those times when you can use subs and that still won't be enough depending on the size of the room.

That's not the story you told on Sid's board. Besides, even your latest rendition is still stealing (taking something that doesn't belong to you).

And yet, you have no problem hauling DJ gear in/out? Fraud.

If I do move anything it's very minimal. Like the case that my 6000 is in or my laptop which is in a bag. Also we have a hand truck we use to move anything that is heavy. I don't lift speakers onto stands or anything like that. That's when I do move gear. I have help moving gear and they refuse me to move anything. They protect me all the time. Even when my ego tells them I can do it they will push me out of the way and won't let me lift a thing.

He bragged openly on Sid's board that he paid someone $20 to "show me where to go get the stuff". I missed the illegal music thing but going to rip off someone's sound equipment is a whole other level of thievery in my book.

Stealing music / equipment is the same same. Actually, stealing music is probably worse because of the value of the contents (at a dollar a song). No matter which way you cut it, stealing is stealing.

Are you nominated for a Grammy this year...? If so, you'll be up against Kanye -- who can't find his way out of the Mens room without help from a caregiver...

I'm not disputing that you found out. I'm disputing that you found out and retired for disability yet you continue to do work that will void this claim.

Just pray that you don't get the same condition one day.

I don't think anyone prays for a disability - and if it's that bad, you shouldn't be a DJ (nor anything else that involves heavy equipment).

I had times when I've had to stop driving and get out to stretch for a few minutes so I could continue to drive.

I think most people have to do this.

That includes while I've been playing and standing up for some hours then being in a lot of pain at the end of the night or when ever the time of the event.

So what would be your answer when an investigator asks a question regarding this.

I had nights where I might have gotten may be 1/2 hour of sleep. I would be so tired I couldn't make it to work.

You would be so tired that you couldn't make it to work but I wonder how many booked events you missed because of this?

How do you consider this to not be a scam at some level? You claim disability so you don't have to work, yet you are willing to haul / move heavy equipment? Even using a hand truck is wrong if you are truly disabled. Doesn't this seem wrong to you?

How would you feel if your partner claimed he couldn't help you move anything anymore because he hurt his back .. and then you see him working with a moving company?

I'm certain there are events you have done by yourself - with no help. Who moved the gear then? ALL of this will look suspicious to an investigator. One of the first questions they will ask - your disabled but you run a DJ company? If you don't move gear, who does? Do you always have help with you? Always? You are not ever alone? If so, are they your employee? Are you paying business and employee taxes? Do you have workers comp? The list goes on and on.

If you are truly disabled and collecting, you should not be loading, unloading, moving, setting up or taking down anything. This also applies to normal everday activities - like buying and moving furniture, tv's, etc - but moreso for things you do regularly, like loading and unloading your van. Even pulling equipment out of your van and putting it on a dolly / hand truck could be grounds for fraud. Heck, even pulling equipment to the edge of the van could be grounds for fraud. Not loading / moving / setting up means you are paying people to do this for you. This means they are an employee. This means you are also paying taxes on the business and its employees and I'm pretty certain that everywhere requires workers comp for employees (if they get hurt while working for you) - for NJ, this is a requirement and there are severe penalties for not having workers comp for an employee.

Let's also be honest about something here - while I do respect that you were gainfully employed as a janitor, you are now claiming disability from said job. Do you think that the disability office will be ok with you working as a DJ but not able to perform your normal duties? Think about this seriously, because it has the potential to cost you any disability funds received, in addition to financial and other penalties, as well as jail time. The disability office has special teams just waiting for someone to collect fraudulently. They will find you and you will become another example / statistic for them if you're not doing it right. Claiming "I didn't know" is not a valid excuse.

Examples:

1: A Massachusetts man was convicted of receiving more than $55,000 in disability payments while continuing to work at his bar. Antonios Sarantos purchased and opened the T.J. Gupeez bar in Taunton, then purportedly injured his back while working at the prison as a state corrections officer. Undercover officers reported witnessing Sarantos working in the bar, even as he contended he was too injured to return to prison work.

2: Eleven people were charged in October of 2011 in an enormous fraud scheme in which Long Island Rail Road workers falsely claimed to have disabling injuries, with some of them collecting pensions while spending time playing golf.

Y'know, I was reading a bunch of articles today, on who shouldn't be allowed to have guns.

I think I have found one...

Heck, he probably shouldn't be able to drive, or operate a gas stove.

We have work coming up that we will be using video screens. As for the size of the screens we're just getting started and don't want to go to far out there. This is brand new to us. Neither one of us have ever done this and we need to know how to do it. Not just buy some bigger screens that still won't be right. We're starting out small and working our way up to bigger screens as needed. .

If this is the case, you should be using the money you took in for booking the event to buy TV's and not your partner's money.

I was asked to give a figure on what we would charge a client for video and audio at their event. We were just talking this over. For 4 hours it would be 1k-$1,200.00. That's what we came up with. We have an event we're doing in Brooklyn where we plan to use both Audio and video at the event. We're just throwing the video in as an added bonus. They don't know a thing about this. This event is for my partners girlfriend and her friends she went to school with. Some are planning on traveling a long ways to come here. Some are coming from as far away as California. It's a $90.00 a plate event for people to attend.

OK so we decided to provide video for them to since this is such a high end event. The plan is to move up the scale in the clients we deal with. Looking to get more bookings from that gig in April.

I won't even entertain any more of your foolishness Rick since you afraid of taking on a wedding that is 18 months away. That just shows me how much of a rookie you are if you can't figure out what a bride wants in 18 months.

The other thing that I find is key is what another member post in a thread he made. It had to do with how much he should get for a deposit. Not to debate what you should call it but the big thing is he said he was charging clients $75.00 for a deposit. He said his fee was around $650.00. Then he went on to mention that he had a few people cancel their event with him.

I say that with such a low fee for a deposit as he put it then some people could easily for go that. Which I figured with such a low fee I would say they just found another DJ cheaper then him to do the event and thus ultimately saving them money in the long run.

Now our contract states that we require a certain percentage for a retainers fee to book us for their event. So for example if it's 50% then if the cost is 1k, that would mean they would have to come up with $500.00 to satisfy the retainers fee for the contract. Even at 25% it would be $250.00. What I'm saying is 2 big things for me. With collecting that much for a retainers fee a client will be less likely to cancel their event not wanting to loose that much money. That also helps to weed out people you don't want to be bothered with.

Speaking of closing the client. My last few contracts, when asked why they should book me over other DJ's I show them Mix's post and say "you could be getting this guy". BAMMM!! the check book comes out.

The sad thing is, some of you think I'm joking.:-/

So mix the answer I was looking for is simple. You are doing this job for fre and throwing in more free stuff. You have the best way to avoid taxes. DO NOT CHARGE ANYTHING.

Oh yes and yet another event where the people throwing the event are charching people to come.

No we're getting paid and what is it that you've never heard of having an event that people will pay to come to. It's a reunion party of sorts and what do you think, the place is just going to let them have the event there for free. The price includes them having the event there, open bar for the 4 hours, food and paying for the DJ. The big thing is if you were running the place would you allow them to come in and drink for free. You're a nice guy right. It wouldn't hurt you to do so would it. Hell then you could not only give the bar away but also you could show them how great a DJ you are at the same time.

oh great now another thread, where mix has no idea whats going on...............

Mix. Rent the video .. you can then decide whether it makes sense. Remember, the stands will cost you as much or more than the screens if you want something stable.

How much did you charge them for this job, that you feel the need to bring video. Mix I do not expect for any business to give away anything for free (unless you are running it) but it seems you can only find jobs where people have to pay to come to. Do weddings near you also charge people to attend?

As for showing people how great of a DJ I am. I have work every weekend and more then I can handle at times. I also am not doing bowling parties or trying to convince bar owners to put out "postcards". Instead I have people asking me to come work for them so they have good entertaiment. That is the difference between you and just about everyone else here. People want us and are willing to pay us. You however are a 50+ DJ who is trying to become something. Like I said before find some old age homes that want to do dances as it will be right up your alley (get it Alley).
