My partner has been talking about when he gets his money from his taxes he wants to get a couple of TV screens to do video with. His original idea was to get 2 32" TV's and put them on stands. His ideal came from someone he saw who had that type of setup. He didn't want the screens to be too big as we're talking about just getting started down this road.

I took him yesterday to Micro Center. He went and got a couple of simple items. While in the place he showed me a TV that he wanted to get 2 of and have them put on stands so we can now actually do video ourselves. It is a Westinghouse 40" 1080P HDTV HDMI. The regular price is $379.99 and it's on sale for $279.99. So they knocked off $100.00. Sorry I didn't get the exact model number. It's hot though. There was another Westinghouse that sold for $349.99 that had a smaller body. Meaning it is thinner. So he is looking to get those for $279.99 and we can then work on providing video to potential clients willing to spend the money for that service.

Just wanted to post this thread so you'll see it's not all on me when it comes to buying and using equipment. He also has DJ equipment himself. He has several controllers with a couple of laptops. It's just that personally I hate the powered speakers he bought. He has a pair of 15" Mackie Thumps. I can't stand those speakers! He said he bought them because of the weight. I don't give a damn! They sound like CHIT to me. What we will be doing with those is to just use them for monitors when needed.

First, a 40" screen isn't useful for much of anything. Aim for 50" minimum.

Second, cheap LCD screens are cheap for a reason. Instead of standing in front of one in the store, take a few steps to the right or left and see how much of the screen is still visible. If you can't see it, your crowd won't be able to either.

Get a projector and a screen -- much easier to set up, a lot less weight to carry, and you don't need to worry about them falling on somebodies head.

On a serious note you just like to come to do an event and blast people out so that their ears are ringing once the music stops? Don't laugh at that last one because I remember a lady at one of the schools where I used to work at gave me a nice compliment. She said she wished I was the DJ who did her cousins wedding. She said the DJ was playing the music so loud that when he stopped the music from playing her ears were still ringing. She said the room wasn't that big and it didn't need to be that loud. Some DJ's will think that's more impressive. The louder the better is what they think will have people saying they are a great DJ.

You are mixing up powerful sound with blaring music. Your ears can hurt from blaring speakers trying to cover an area that is too large.

He may have been a Janitor but at least he was doing honest labor and not out there robbing someone for money. I respect anyone who is gainfully employed, even my Garbage man gets respect from me because he is doing what he has to do to feed his family. Don't make fun of people's livelihood. Just saying.

We have work coming up that we will be using video screens. As for the size of the screens we're just getting started and don't want to go to far out there. This is brand new to us. Neither one of us have ever done this and we need to know how to do it. Not just buy some bigger screens that still won't be right. We're starting out small and working our way up to bigger screens as needed.

We just had a thread on that with a DJ trying to do an event and the sound he's using isn't good enough to cover the room. That's where you do either 1 or 2 things. Either you rent the extra gear to do the event with or you pass the gig up and let someone else do the gig that has the right tools to use.

How much are you charging to have video for this upcoming gig? Second you obviously you do not understand having subs on a system do not make things louder necessarily but help make it sound better. I can setup my 2 tops and two subs in my house and play at a nice volume and have it sounding great. That’s why they have the little volume control on the mixer. It doesn't always need to be all the way up.

Do you have a music video library to use? Might want to start there and hold off until black friday. I bought my son a 32" Emerson tv for under $200 a couple weeks after black friday from Sam's Club. Hell I even saw Walgreens had 32" tv's under $200 for sale(during black friday & close to christmas). Listen to the advice given and go bigger!

First off - this falls under the logic of pay for it once - nothing like buying equipment to only have to buy it again - invest wisely. I might understand if you were going to try it out to see if you like it - but according to you, you have work coming up that will require this. This doesn't sound like you're going to be "trying it out". If you're going to commit to a client / event, you better be ready to back it up with the proper equipment.

He bragged openly on Sid's board that he paid someone $20 to "show me where to go get the stuff". I missed the illegal music thing but going to rip off someone's sound equipment is a whole other level of thievery in my book.
