Mix creates his own gigs -- why can't you...?


I can totally agree with Scott -- at some point in time, you get tired of that late night crap. The kind of bar gigs I actually still enjoy, are the ones at the waterfront bars during the daytime. You get to play like 4-5 hours, lots of chicks in bikinis, lots of sun, boats, etc. Most of those types of places (in my experience), bring a band in at night. Decent money, tips, food, beer -- life is much less stressful.

...and this economic advice is supposedly coming from someone with no running water?
I don't see any professional issues with working a night shift - unless of course it interferes with your real job.

I have running water -- it's just not exactly clear. That's sorta what happens when you have a spring well, with 100+ year old pipes. I suppose I could spend the $10 grand to hook up to the town water (and blow every pipe in the house because of the pressure). But with the rather large, ominous For Sale sign out front, it doesn't really seem worth the effort, considering this is industrial property, and everyone who has been interested in it plans to tear down the building. So, economically, it's not a good investment.

It all depends on how you use the term Canute. I said "I just think". That doesn't mean he is, but that's how I feel based upon his condescending remarks to many people here.

If somebody wants to come here and troll, just to put other folks down (sorta like telling people that if they don't spread their speakers, they are ignorant and not a "pro"... hint) -- then I feel free to voice my opinion.

If that is in reference to me then you must not have comprehended my message as to why it is good to spread speakers.
1. Proper Sound and reduction of Comb filtering: (Maybe if one is oblivious about correct sound then they really should not call themselves a Pro if that is their business. If the shoes fit, wear it)
2. Aesthetics: Speakers and Gear in a clump look conspicious. Small footprint my azz! It is the same space taken spread or otherwise. Don't get me started.
3. Proper Way: It is not "my way" vs "your way", is is the Proper Way. Comprendo? What is so condescending about that. People need to know the facts especially the newbies. If all they see is speakers being placed like Headphones then they will think it is the correct way.

I suppose you and others on this site get a pass because you disguise your bigotry toward posters like Mix, and those you stalk as sub-par to be enlightenment?
So many of you simply hate on the guy and pretend to be helpful with advice that ignores the economic reality of his resources and simultaneously bashes him for the same. He's got bigger hurdles and as a result more street credibility than most on this site.

Simple truth is too many of you need a sub-class to feed your ego. How long can you go without your "bottom-feeder" fix?
'Tis sweet but fragile in suburbia when you're only claim to being a "DJ" is a laptop, 250 free biz cards, and a web page. ...and perhaps a real job too?

There are too many variables to make a blanket statement like that, and force it down peoples throats. Again, a condescending statement, that you are right, and any other differing opinion is wrong. I will trust my ears, before I trust your "proper way".

He's got bigger hurdles and as a result more street credibility than most on this site.

If "street" cred means you can't spell the word steady, and instead type "study", and you have to pay to do most of your gigs, instead of getting paid -- then he has street cred.

Many of us have tried to point him in a reasonable direction, yet he keeps taking the fork in the road.

Well you do things your way, I'll do them my way. I read lots of stuff, but in the end, it comes down to my ears as to how I setup, and the equipment I use.

I am a versatile DJ and it is my Career/Business. I do not have a "Day Job" and DJing is not a Hobby to me. My other Business that I have involves daytime hours and if I have to get home from a gig at 4.00am in the morning and start a project in my other business at 7.00am, I do it without complaint. Yes, a lot of Club Owners are buttheads and do not know what they are doing but most Weddings do not occur during the week so I chase those lucrative dollars. For me it is more fun doing a Club/Bar Gig than a Wedding anyway, even Corporate/Private Functions are much more fun and less stress. Therefore I know how to work with the Bar Owners and if I can't I move on to the next one and the next Dollar. I cannot create a Wedding and hire myself but I can get in my vehicle and go out and canvass/visit a few Bars and I am sure to come back with a booked Gig. I like to sell!

of course there is. Tons of different events out there. Who is saying there is not?

but some djs evolve and like to do different events that they did years ago.

i loved doing bars and meeting girls years ago. It was a blast. Today, my priorities have changed. If someone thinks it makes me a bad business person, or as someone else said, it's because I don't rely on the money as my sole source of income, they are free to think that. However,I think it's a foolish way to think.

i was merely trying to help mix, who seems to be having a very difficult time booking bars. They seem to be costing him money, not making him money. Merely suggesting that he look at other options.

but you and bob completely missed the point. You seemed to think that I was putting down doing bars.....and bob, well, who knows what the heck he's thinking. He just rambles with the insults.

DO you want to get in the ring and see who the heavy weight champion of DJ's is? The first person that gets either knocked out or knocked down is the winner. Scott I agree and I like to just get paid up front myself. This is what the owner proposes and it is his house. So he can do as he pleases. I have the right to say yes or no. If I feel it won't work for me then I'll say no. Never mind if it works for him. I've got to protect my interest just as he has to protect his. He mentioned to us we didn't want to know what it cost him to run the place. I don't care what it cost him to run the place. I'm concerned with how much we can make off the place if we come there to play.

Those 2 are so caught up in security and my issue to me is more about what he is willing to give to get people to come to the place. I said to keep the cost down even though he said he would split the cost of security is to just have one person at the door checking folks as they come in. Especially since we're talking about first starting out and don't know if we do this how many people will show up that first night. My thing is about getting bodies in the place. If only 10 people show up then there really is no need for security.

BTW, you have been the one harping on security, and now you are laying the blame at the feet of your "partners". Could you make up your mind...?

Just a thought, but since you don't seem to actually do much DJ'ing -- why not handle the door yourself?
