I had the chance to do a really nice gig but it fell through. There's this promoter who was looking to have this party on December 30th in a club called CIC in Orange, NJ. He was planning on having Colonel Abrams come and sing at the party. He needed a DJ to come and play for the party. I was in a place where he asked my friend could he do the gig? My friend said he had tyo check to see if he was booked or not. I decided to let the promoter know that if my friend couldn't do it we could possibly do it.

I gave the promoter my card and on Friday he called me to ask me about doing the gig. He gave me Colonel Abrams number for me to call him to find out what he would need to be able to do the gig. I called him a couple of hours later to find all he would need to come and sing at the party. He said a couple of monitors and a good cordless mic. The party was to be about the DJ playing all old school house music.

For those who are asking who is Colonel Abrams? He's a very great singer who was popular in the 80's to the early 90's. He was famous for house music. He recorded such songs as Trapped which went to number 1. Then there was Music Is The Answer, Speculation and many others. I can't think of them all right now.

He did my favorite song of all times. I used to go to the club just to hear this song because it never was put out on a record. If I heard that song any where including on the street I would stop whatever I was doing and start dancing. To this day it's still my favorite and I'm talking well over 25 years later. The song is called Release The Tension. If you don't know the song you can look it up on Youtube and you can hear it.

So I talked to the promoter later on and we were supposed to meet he guy this past Friday at the club at 10pm to check the place out to see how we would do the gig and what we needed to bring. Probably just 2 of the powered speakers, a mixing board to plug the speakers into which the board would be hooked into the clubs system, laptop, mic and simply just hook everything up to the clubs system. Not sure how things would have been done but that was the reason for going to the club and to discuss the details about the event including how much we would get paid to do the event.

Please keep in mid like I said the gig fell through. We got their to the club and I called the promoter. He said he wasn't coming. He tells me there was a problem and what it was. He said the owner of the club was charging him $400.00 to rent the club out that night. He said he was prepared to give the owner a $200.00 deposit to hold the spot for that date.

Now on to the problem. He said that Colonel Abrams wanted $2,000.00 to come and sing at the party. He had to be out of his damn mind. So the promoter who has done many different things in the past meaning he's no stranger to promoting events asked me what did I think he should do? Considering how little time he had from now to then to promote the event and this guy wanting 2k for him to scrap the party. It would have been a great event to do for us considering who the singer was to be. That would have some great publicity for us but that sounded like a disaster waiting to happen. That's just too much to pay this guy to come and sing at a club in Orange, NJ. He's old now. The only people that would know him are the people who used to go to the clubs way back then. Now how many of those people even go out any more if they are even still alive today.

So I said don't do it. It hurt my heart to tell him don't do it because it would have been a great opportunity for us to shine but just not worth the risk of taking a chance this party would work or not considering we're talking only 3 weeks to promote this party and Christmas being right around the corner.

So we won't be doing this one but since the promoter knows me and I'm a friend of the other DJ he said he's got other shows lined up and he will be using us in the future. Some singers egos are just to big for their own good. To end it I checked online to see if he had any dates lined up in the future to sing some where and nothing came up. I could possibly see him getting 1k to come and do the party but certainly not 2k. That's rediculous for him to think he could come to a club in Orange, NJ and expect to get paid 2k. We're not talking NYC which he did a gig with some other stars from back in the day that was announced all over WBLS with a very well know DJ. He simply must have had a flash back to when he was the s*** way back then.

Now there is Singer Kenny Bobien who did the song You Are My Friend which I'm sure you've all either heard or have in your library. He's done such other big hits like Gave Me Love, I Shall Not Be Moved and Grateful. He gets any where between $750.00 to 1k to do a show in a club setting. I don't know how Colonel Abrams thinks he deserves more then him. Young and old knows Kenny and will come to hear him sing. Those young people won't hardly know who the Colonel is. The just might know him from their mother and fathers playing his music back in the day. Sorry this post went so long but i just had to tell this story. I've got to get dressed to leave out. I have a very busy day this Sunday.

Another, bar/club. Another promoter who obviously has no clue what he is doing since he is taking advice from you. Last but not least another failed job post by Mix. You do know the object is to get real paying gigs and not these fantasy jobs you seem to always come across. The most unbelievable thing I read in this post was you started doing work for a job that you didn't book or get a deposit for and even better you had not even discussed your fee. Yet you started contacting people and went to a location to look into things and still had not discussed your cost or had a signed contract. SMART BUSINESS.

Mix, it is Sunday morning and after reading your post it makes me want to start drinking already! Instead I will hold my head in my hand and bawl! Aspirin is no help here in this case!

Here's what really went down...After speaking with mix on the phone he just doubled his performance fee just to get out of this gig! lol

j/k

I think the Colonel price is very fair for a live performance. you also forget the guy needs a hotel room and transportation which he may already include in his fee. New artist won't even make an appearance at a club for 2k.

not sure why I am going to waste my time replying to this.....but hey, I am bored, so here goes....

First off, if the promoter is only JUST NOW trying to put this together, the guy obviously has not clue what he is doing. This is essentially a New Years Eve gig (in the live music area, this whole weekend is considered NYE). This means most of the "quality" acts have been booked for months now (the 2 bands I still do a little work for have had this entire weekend, meaning Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday booked 18 months ago).

$2000 is NOTHING for even a nobody performer on this weekend. The problem with this entire situation is that the promoter is too late to the party, and he knows it, so he is blaming the "high fee" on his not doing the show instead of just manning up and saying he knews he blew it and did not have time to put it together.

From your side Mix, if this guys is even 1/10 as popular as you said he was in his heyday......a couple powered speakers would not have cut it. Even guys from 20 years ago are going to have a very specific rider which will lay out EXACTLY what the minimum they will require for a performance will be. This is most likely another reason the promoter pulled the plug on it, because any club who will rent their entire place out for only $400 is not going to have the required system the performer states in his rider.

Mix, I try not to get involved in your posts because honestly, you never ever listen to what anyone on here tells you, which is your own perogative. But if I could offer one piece of advice to you and hope you take it to heart, it is stop chasing these "dream jobs" and just set up a business which is clearly after one market and stick to it. Are you a club DJ or a wedding DJ? A sweet 16 dj or a corporate dj? It is fine to branch out every now and then and do something outside of your core market, ONCE you get your core market established, but you have to establish it first.

$2K is pretty normal for a C-level artist, especially one that is still booking .. your promoter should have known this and honestly, shouldn't be doing this in December .. act should have been booked 4+ months ago. I do live sound occasionally for a local kid who has had songs in the Billboard top 10 jazz charts. Unless it's a bar gig for local friends, the gigs are booked 6+ months in advance (even the quick bar gigs are 2+ months out). It's apparent your promoter friend isn't really in the game.

Mix .. there is no shortcut to decent paying jobs. You appear too desperate to get these gigs, but don't have the resume to land them. As others have mentioned, you may be better off working for a multi-op who does the marketing or like Canute with an event company that books you.

My Entertainment Agency does not take just any and everyone. Their reputation depends on a good performance by those who they send out to represent them.

I didn't infer he would get in to your agency .. just that it was an avenue I believe he should pursue.

Any Agency worth their salt will check out the Performer first before starting to send them out.

Mix, you seem to have a knack for chasing empty cabs.

$2,000 is not a lot of money for a headline singer - even a 80's has been (no offense) like Colonel Abrams. I used to do audio in the late 80's for Track Acts like The Cover Girls, Company B, Brenda K Starr, Pajama Party, etc. and I believe I got at least a third of that amount (25 years ago!) for 4 track reel-to-reel, mics, monitors and mix. Today, I would charge about half that for the audio, close to all of it if I also had to DJ.

Nice weeknight work... until Milli Vanilli came along. :)

BTW: You can never want to much money... though you might encounter a lot of prospects with too little of it.

Dude Colonel Abrams is still what I would consider a pioneer and a very good act to book even today. $2000.00 is dirt cheap. The promoter had his head up his ass and clearly has no clue. 400.00 for a venue space is dirt cheap. Abrams name would draw a good sized crowd from NJ, Philly and NY, if promoted correctly. C'mon Mix talk to Mike Walter in the NJDJA and let him train you and you can work with his company. You need stability.. Did you even make back the money you shelled out for you new gear yet?

Exactly, we are looking to get hooked up with an entertainment agency, but are going to wait until 2014 before we start sending off promo packs to the ones we want so we can make sure we are at the level needed to be associated with the agency we want to be with.

In the meantime the DJ Landscape is changing plus you still may have nights with no bookings that could be filled! Why wait?

Just let it be Jimmy. It is what it is.

Dude, even I get paid $2000+ for my talents... don't hate on the Colonel.

BTW... I've never heard of Kenny Bobien, but I know at least three Colonel Abrams songs.

To make sure we have everything exactly how we want it before we approach them.....you only get one chance to make a first impression and we want to make sure ours is the best it can be.

It's your actual DJ performance not the "impression" that the agent will need to sell.
Also, it's the agents job to tell you what it is you need to do to be marketable.
You're likely wasting time on things that might have no benefit to you, or are contrary to what you really should be doing.
So as Canute asked: "what are you waiting for?"

Mix,
You should have a Colonel Abrams track as your theme song: "I'm not gonna let..."

There's no hotel fee or any such thing like that. He was just going to show up and perform, then leave. Trust me this promoter knows his stuff. He's looking to book Harold Melvin's Blue Notes for an event. The problem with the situation is just that the time was very limited to promote this party and they were looking for me to help out with that side of things.

I don't have a problem with that but the bottom line is about not taking a chance on losing money. If you were the promoter you would at least want to break even. Besides that you can get an even more popular star of today like Kenny to do it cheaper and he will draw a big crowd depending on where the event is held at.

My friend just had Kenny to perform in Clark at the Holiday Inn and over 400 people showed up. He certainly didn't get 2k and he's more popular then the Colonel. The Colonel is what was. Kenny is what is now. Please remember this. The event was 3 weeks away which I felt just wasn't enough time to properly promote this party unless you bought time on radio station WBLS and who knows how much that would cost. Which comes back to if the promoter could afford that. I really don't know if he could or not.
