Tough lesson learned

I was doing the music for the ceremony tonight. I use Media Player when I do that. No more.

It turns out that this place uses Media Player for their house music in the course of their regular business. Their library is shared on that program, through the wireless internet, which I was connected to.

Well, the recessional song was one of the songs in the facility's library. So, when I tried to play my copy of it (it worked great last night at home when I tried it), it read the shared library version (I think) and didn't like my copy. It asked for a license to be downloaded.

I scrambled and tried another version in my library, with the same results. I had to pull it up on youtube to play it for the recessional. It was about a 20 second delay in playing it. SUCKS!!.

Lesson is? I won't be using Media Player anymore at ceremonies.

Buy it. Store it! Be prepared! Why connet to the internet when you have it on your internal or external HD?

Lesson: NEVER play anything that's not on your local hard drive. Streaming from the internet, cloud device or especially a house system is a big no-no. I did a lighting job a couple of months back where the DJ was trying to stream youtube off his phone. What a nightmare. I finally started downloading cuts for him and putting on a thumbdrive. Complete misery.

Rick I didn't. The shared file from the facility grabbed it and it requested the license for a song I ripped from my collection, just because it was in that shared file.

Actually I did end up playing the youtube version in its place. So, I guess I did, but only as a default. I have the song and it works unless the Media Player program derails it.

No offense meant in any way, but in the event that this actually true, what do you tell the people when you can't get the song?

To me this is the big no-no here. You can not claim to have a 100% legal music library and do this at the same time. What happens the the guy with the iPhone walks up to you with a video from Youtube and says "play this, you say you can get any song at any event" but it is actually a youtube only remix of a song?

There is NO WAY I would ever connect my gigging computer to the internet in any way. We tell every client they have until Tuesday to get their request list in to us, after that day, it is only what we have on our hard drive at the event that will be played.

I use I-Cloud, but just to manage my library. I am never hooked to the NET while DJing. If I have a request that is not in my 11,000 song library, I use an I-Phone to go out and look at it (check the lyrics) if I think it will fit the gig and is clean, I download it on the I-Phone, and then transfer it to the computer.

If you stay hooked to the NET you will get an interuption sooner or later from a update, virus protection, computer manufacturers addware/spyware.

I connect to the web at practically every gig and have never had the issues you mentioned. I regularly use amazon to hot-download songs but almost never stream them. To the original poster, I hope you didn't think I was taking a dig at you. You got popped by a microsoft "feature" and I'd like to thank you for sharing the warning. I prefer winamp precisely because of the control you have over the config. MP has too much automatic crap turned on, which you can't turn off.

for MP wouldnt use it at anytime, its so unpredictable you never know what they will throw at you next

now MS are the NEW owners of Skype there will be no more Messenger
that means another change to MP soon as well

winamp for easy use for ceremonies is the first choice of weapon here.........

Thanks Rick. I use Amazon.com all the time. And, I posted this as a warning for others who, like me, might not have thought of this.

Sometimes this board drives me crazy. It's why I left it for a long time. Next time might be longer.

Some of these responses amaze me, really! No wonder there are so much wannabes in the Industry. Using Windows Media Player as a Tool to play Music for a Paid Gig is very unprofessional. ANY DJ Software, including Rockit, that is worth it's salt, can handle any playlist. I would not go on the internet to download any song for anybody from my main computer, plain and simple. I don't make excuses for it nor would I feel embarrassed if I did not have the requested song. If one cannot handle that objection in a positive way and able to turn things around, they are not a salesperson. If one feels like they have to go on the Internet they should have a secondary Laptop to handle that task.

You are lucky and unless you can write a batch file (modify your config sys) to control your system while you are DJing, or built your own system and only installed your known software on the hard drive, I will write you a 100% gurantee if you do enough events, you will have a (got you) sooner or later being hooked to the NET on the machine you are DJing off of, if you are using something like VDJ. Heck of a run on sentence!

I am not being a smart butt, but I have enough IT experience to write you that gurantee. God luck.

I thought that was next month... Don't confuse me...

I think I left my waterless cookware in FL, otherwise I would contact the Mayans through them, and download their new calendar with the V2.0 update.
