I had a job to do this past Thursday in the bar in Orange, NJ. My friend couldn't play this Thursday because he had a 50th wedding anniversary to do. So i covered the bar for him. I didn't know he had came into the bar after doing the event. He texted me he was in the bar. He was sitting where i couldn't see him because the front door was blocking my view being open.
We talked briefly. We have a thing with each other. He says he has to come in to make sure i don't steal his job from him. That's funny because of 2 things. I don't screw my friends like that and he's been playing in the same bar for over 22 years.
He tells me that he just got some bad news. A lady that used to be a barmaid in the bar lost her husband. I finish that night and get the equipment home. That night is dedicated to the DJ playing there on Thursday to play classic soul. I did play quite a bit of that but the crowd that came in wanted to hear house music. So i had to please the crowd and i told the manager what happened. He didn't have a big issue with that once i explained what happened. It wasn't me doing what i wanted to do.
I get a call from the manager on Friday wanting to know if i would play in the bar that night. I was tired and hurting but i said yes. I really didn't want to do it but i friend wasn't feeling up to it since his friend had just died. The barmaid that was there that night said i did a better job then the last time i was there despite how i told her you couldn't tell i didn't feel like playing.
What made it even tougher was a bunch of drunks wanting me to play their song next which meant i had to keep changing sets as i was in a grove. Not too big a deal because i knew what to do and when. I'm on a stage and had to remind them to watch out bumping against the table i was playing on.
Now onto what happened as i was leaving the bar loading up. I was in the bar getting ready to move the gear out of the bar. I was double parked and had the doors open on the van. All of a sudden the guy outside that works in the bar tells me someone just hit my van and kept going. He stopped to wait for the light to change and then kept going. I wasn't going to run to the light and confront the driver who had just hit my van.
The van is a mess right now but at least i wasn't hurt and the van can be fixed. This is the second time this van has been hit. In August someone hit me in the back while i was driving. So i'm having bad luck with vans lately. The last one i had got hit twice too. The first time in the rear and then by someone in a stolen rent a car while it was parked. I had to buy a chain with a lock to try to keep the passenger side door from opening up. Called the insurance company and just waiting to see what they will have to say. I called the police and will pick up the police report when it is available. The really bad part on top of that is that on Tuesday I'm starting my vacation from my day job. Here is a picture of the damage.
