I would check .. there generally IS NO difference between business and residential phone service .. it's usually just the packaging of options (including directory service). It used to be years ago they reserved the special numbers (xx00,xx11, etc.) for businesses, but that has long since changed. I would call and ask the cost and process and assume it CAN be done. I know you can port them to a cell phone (though it takes longer than a residential line .. usually a week).

Rick...I understand what you are saying...about fresh contact. That will happen regardless of when I change the number. I'm considering Canute and Steve's suggestion to call and ask. ;)

Called New Residential Customers: Yes, I can convert Bus number to Residential; however, must be done through the Business side of the company. I learned that changing from Bus to Non-Residence service would only save me $10 +/- and that being the case, I may just as well wait until my advertising expieres (May 2013) and then decide.

I was also looking into adding a 3rd Cell Phone & number to my existing plan, but realized that there would be some degree of inconvenience since the phone would then have to be positioned centrally within the home for answering. Also, it would have to remain on "charger" 24/7. Although, it could be call forwarded when desired, too. And, if the power goes out, so does the cell phone whereas the landline will still work even if the power is off to the house/street, area, whatever. And, with a residential line I will have a listing in the telephone directory...I don't have one now except for the business number.

Decisions, decisions... Alas, my mind is being overburdened with what if's. Guess I stop and "smell the roses" and revisit at a later date.

Thanks everybody for you useful pointers.

Landlines only work in a power outage if you have non-cordless models, which most don't anymore. Also, some newer cordless systems will hookup via bluetooth to a cell phone and allow you to answer the call on any handset in the system. That way you can keep the cell plugged in where it gets the best signal, locate the base near it and set out cordless handsets around the house. (panasonic Link-2-Cell or VTech Connect-2-Cell)

This is what I used during the last Hurricane Ike here in Houston when Power went.

Steve...thanks for the advice. And, Canute, I have a "princes" phone from many years ago that was located in the bedroom. I like the advice about bluetooth/to wall unit, too.

For the time being I'm going to stay with the Bus Line and evaluate this Spring which direction to take--cell phones or residential line, since I can convert my business number to residential.

Actually here they give you a phone number and it can be either personal or for Business
its the amount of $$$$ you pay for that counts

plus if you close the business down you can still keep the original number as a private number
after you show proof your closed!

I'll say congrads on you deciding to drop advertising that you saw wasn't working. When you decide on the advertising you're going to take and spend that $450.00, please let us know how that works out. The up and down sides of the new advertising.
