Remember that thread where I was DJing at martial arts places for $0 - $1000?

Sorry, can't find the original thread, but I wanted to bring this up again. For those who don't know, about 2 years ago I came up with an idea. My kids were taking Tae Kwon Do at a local place. I found out the the owner was having a membership drive in the near future. I offered him this deal. I would DJ at no charge to him unless he signed kids up within 2 weeks ( I think ) of a party he would throw.... but for each kid he did sign up, I would get $100 per kid....

Before we go any further, this was 2 years ago, and I am just going from memory. My numbers might be off, but I think I am correct.

OK, so I would DJ and handle the whole event... I had them paying games, I MC'd exhibitions.........

Well, it worked out OK.... I made a couple hundred bucks, I think.

Anyway, I have tried to keep this going in other martial arts centers, and the results were mixed for me..... I have had days where I made no money. I have had a day where I made $600 for an hour. Usually I make $200 for an hour, maybe $300. But at one particular place, I was always making $300 - $400, it seemed. We did his center 2x a year in the past. Well, the guy who owned the place called me today, and asked me if we could do FOUR events next year..... April, July, September, and late November. ( So, w/o looking it up, this guy gave me $1200 - $1600 business over 2 years.... ON SATURDAY MORNINGS, when nothing else was going on )

While I take that as a compliment, I don't know if I want to do that from this perspective...... It might be overkill, and I have a feeling that I would end up doing at least one of those events for free because there are only so many kids who will want to do martial arts. I want to tell him that I think it is a bad idea FOR ME, but I don't want to get the guy upset either.

What would you do, or say to the guy?

If it was convenient for me to get to, I'd do it. I think if anything, it'll be a good guide to see if doing it too much doesn't make much sense.

Another idea is to say that you believe 4 might be too much, but as long as he's willing to commit to at least $200 per event, you'll do it..or something along those lines

You might think, but I don't bring the bubble thing to the martial arts places, but I do have business cards.... however, best as I can recall, I have never booked a BP from one of these events.

The advertising banner can sit on your vehicle or trailer ... or you can make up a custom front board sign "Bubbles & Bows" (Bow as in "take one", not "tie one")

I don't know why, but your post here just gave me an idea...... I will start giving away my promotional DVDs at these events, AND I guess I should get a banner for the Bubble Party events..... I'm dead set against them at adult events, but at kids events they would be fine.

Pap, I'd do it and wouldn't hesitate. If you do 2 at full pay, it's less money than 3 at full pay (with a possible 4th). Don't discount how many kids these folks can sign up IF they have the right kind of event to promote it. Were I you, I'd study what he's doing and see if you can help the other centers apply the same things to theirs.

OK, Scott.... I basically took your idea. We will do the same as we always have for the first 3 of the year, and he decided that when we do the 4th, he would guarantee $150 minimum.
