I hate cheap gear but I need another generator and a new Honda is not currently in my budget. I was looking at one of these since it will be used very little.

I use a Honda eu3000i for my big system but this would be used for my small ceremony system and/or maybe some lighting. I know there is no replacement for a Honda but this is less than half the price.
 
It's not a Honda, but reviews seem to be ok.

Sam's Club had these for a while at $275. I'm still kicking myself I didn't snag it.

Costco had one for $299 recently, but it wasn't the Champion (it was red .. forget the name). I remember looking it up and it had dismal reviews.

How big of a genny do you need for your ceremony rig? I only ask because you might only need something smaller that could fit into your budget.

We've got a Honda EU1000i and it's more than enough for our ceremony stuff.

J Mac, I'm not sure how much juice I pull, I use a Yamaha EMX 312 powered mixer,laptop, & wireless mics for my ceremony system. According to its specs, I'm sure this generator is plenty powerful enough. I'm just worried about it being quiet and dependable.

Come on guys, is this the best you can do into talking me out of this.:D

My guess is you're probably pulling 150-300 watts on average. A Kill-a-watt meter is handy for this. Were I you, I would not do anything less than a 2000-watt unit. It's pretty easy to jump to 10amps and I'd never want to push a generator towards its maximum rated output, besides loading one down causes it to suck fuel much more quickly. I think that generator would be an excellent move for you.

Imagine for a moment that you plug all of your gear into this generator, flick all of the power switches to "on", and then find that nothing's working.

Next, imagine that your gear continues to be non-functional, no matter what outlet it's plugged into, thanks to your purchase and use of a refurbished off-name generator that didn't have the same specs that it was advertised as having.

Personally, my gear and peace-of-mind is worth the extra expense of buying the Honda generator.
 
But even Honda generators fail, so 2 of the cheapies may still be a better solution, since we're all bringing backup generators aren't we?

Something to maybe think about if you've got the time before you need another genny is get a watt meter (from amazon, etc) and see how much juice you actually need.

The Champions (that I know of) were bought from Costco, we have a relative that bought one. The only issue, there was a recall on the carburetor - if you chose to fix it, they sent you the parts (easy fix) and if not, they told you the closest dealer. Most of these had electric start on them. If I remember right, 5500 running watts, 8250 starting watts. I, myself, have a Briggs / Stratton 5500 watt Gen from Lowes - no issues in over 3 years, knock on wood. It is a pullstart (that will become an issue as they years go on).
 
Ordered it Wednesday afternoon, FedEx showed up with a big box Friday morning, that was fast.

Anyhoo, I cranked it in the driveway and hooked up every power tool I had in the garage.... no issues. Next I ran a 50' 12 Gauge extention cord in the house and hooked up my big system(4 crown amps). I knew I was pushing my luck and I really just wanted to see what it would take to trip the genny. I was rather surprized when I cranked up the system and it preformed under load for about an hour without a hiccup.

I plan to test it a few more times before I use it for gig but so far so good.
