Researching Moving Heads

Looking to build on my lighting rig and am considering getting a couple of moving heads by year end. So far I have read up on the Qspot 260 and 560 in this forum which seems to have a good following. I also looked at the Xmove and Intimidator lines which doesn't seem to get much love here or elsewhere.

I have my eye on the Qspot 260 for now. Any other thoughts from the group on other options to consider that compare to the 260?

I hear ya. I've recently started into DMX programming via Freestyler and Velleman interface. I haven't done anything too fancy yet but plan to get aggressive with lighting in 2013.

Thanks Steve. The Platinum 5R's look awesome. My budget is about the cost of one of these units though. This is now on my "upgrade" list.
 
For Moving heads I would go with Elation, it is the Higher end to ADJ (Same company)

Save your money for the Platinum Spot 5Rs. I bought the Q-spot 260 and sold them. They is no comparison between the two.

Were they tough to sell the and did you get any ROI on them before you did? I tend to grow my gear upward so if resale value is there I may start with the Q-spots for 6+ months and move into the Platinums.

I know renting is an option but I am at my best when I know my gear so like having the gear handy when I have time to do a deep dive into capabilities during down time. Moving heads with custom gobos will be a game changer for me so I don't want to wait too long.

I cant justify the expense of the Platiinums at the moment (besides wife would kill me). But the Q-spots are in range. I have been saving for a pair of KW181 subs and a couple of light bars but have decided to build 2 pair of Fitzmaurice Tuba24 duals and get a few more 56pucks for flexibility. The savings will go toward moving heads. Guess I need to win some more work eh.

I like how there are some nice full room shots showing just how bright they are.

FYI, any mover is going to require a lot of programming to make it look good; built-in programs pretty much suck. You may also want to look at the tried and true Elation Focus Spot 250R which is fairly inexpensive. It does not have a prism but has a HUGE 18 degree beam angle and 250 watt discharge bulb.

The Q-Spot 260 LEDs aren't bad for the price, and are a nice "starter" fixture for someone getting into moving heads. They're much better than the 150 series and some of the other lower-priced movers, but bright enough to get you by while you get used to programming and using them. Eventually, you'll want something brighter. Or, you may decide that moving heads aren't for you and sell them. For that reason alone, I recommend the Q-Spot 260 LEDs over the Blizzard fixtures. Honestly, I don't think there's much a resale market for Blizzard's moving heads. They're relatively unknown, and far more people own Q-Spot 260 LED's.

Elation Platinum Spot 5R's are sweet, but definitely not a starter fixture. Even with money to spend, I chose the Chauvet movers. You can always move up.

Also, a word of advice: Whatever you buy, take time to learn the programming. The quality of the built-in programs should not be a factor when choosing moving heads.

I agree that Elation is an excellent fixture, but understanding the budget I think you should take a good look at the Chauvet Intimidator Spot 250 and 350. We have a pretty ridiculously low price on them if you're interested. Also we have some b-stock Q-Spot 260 LED also at a fantastic discount. If interested, just drop me a message.
