My lighting is pretty basic and I want to start building up as I am starting to win more work.

Currently have a mini spot, Chauvet 4-bar, some SlimPar56s, and an Obey3 controller.

I have a reception on 9/2, Van Gogh (Starry Night) is the theme and I am considering a water effect like an ADJ H2O or Chauvet Abyss during cocktail hour (blue or blue/yellow blend). Anyone out there using these and how do you like them?

For the dance floor I am looking at the 4-play or Revo. I've seen comments here that have me leaning toward the Revo but not sure on how to gauge the pros/cons between the two fixtures. I like the 4-play given the multi-directional option however with the Revo Id have to get multiple units to do same. Can anyone speak more to the good/bad of these two or suggest alternatives.

Pardon the long thread and thanks for the input.

You may be set on what you want but I will make a suggestion here. For "Starry Night", I would use a Bliss Light or Micro Galaxian. Point it at the ceiling and it will go along with the theme.

EDIT: I have the Revo and like it but I find that you lose the beauty of its effects on a filled dance floor. It is better suited for a ceiling os blank wall. The 4 Play is better on a filled dance floor.

I have the Revo 4 and like it a lot. BTW, make sure you play Don McLean's Vincent .. It's about the painting and Van Gogh.

Dos the Micro Galaxian cover a good portion of the ceiling?

Depends on where you can place it.
The ideal spot to cover the whole ceiling is in the center of the room, on the floor.
Usually right where the dance floor is.
More than likely, you will have to make due putting it somewhere else and getting less coverage.

Ok have to ask. Isn't on the floor kind of dangerous with people eyes?

Yes it is quite dangerous. The manufacturers even say in the manuals and the warning tags on the unit itself, do not shine at people. My wife has some eye damage thanks to a reckless idiot "professional" dj who was shining his laser down on people at a bridal show.

Most light or microphone stands have threaded tops and matching nuts/caps. You should be able to use just the bracket that comes with the laser and slide it over the top of the stand and use the nut(s) to hold it. Canute's lamp stand has a trimmer base than a mic stand, but either should work well.

Alternatively, you could mount it on top of a speaker. You want it near to the dance floor pointing UP (never down). The farther you are, the more spread out the beam becomes and the pattern less distinct (unless that's what you want).

If you want to light the floor with a pattern, use a LED effect light.

I've never used lasers and never will. After hearing so many stories about the dangers of lasers, and people having eye damage from them, people getting in trouble accidently from them, I'm too afraid to use lasers. Even low powered ones. I don't want to take a chance. I'm not big on the lighting either. I have a T-Stand with a Chauvet color bank, Chauvet LX-5, and a Chauvet LX-15, in the future I will get a Chauvet Comet LED. My stand works great, adds a nice simple effect, and with fog, when allowed/permitted, it becomes even more fascinating....

IMHO the risk factor is similar to playing music too loud or not using the proper equipment and or technique when mounting speakers.

I practice using my tools in the manner they were designed to avoid such things. Like in this particular application the Galaxian will be point at the ceiling and away from the audience.

Yeah, that was the point.
In order to get the best ceiling coverage, you have to place it in the WORST place.
So you'll have to settle for someplace higher and not as centered.

You don't have to be in the center of a dance floor to be able to cover the ceiling, don't you know anything about "point and shoot"? ;)

It's all about the angles, dear sir.
If your laser is on the side of the room, the dots look more like DASHES!

Don't buy Lasers from the Dollar Store. :sqlaugh:
