Court: Christians can be ordered to violate beliefs

I would certainly hope they'll appeal and that the Supreme Court would over-turn it but man, is that a lot o trouble to go through. I know there are some of us who say to tell the absolute truth to every customer but business-wise, it's stupid. There are plenty of times where it just makes sense to simply tell a prospect "I'm booked" and avoid telling them something that gives them legal grounds against you.
 
The problem is rules are being changed ... A catholic hospital which ran under catholic rules for decades if not longer, now has to provide something (contraception or abortion) that is against church policy and isn't a job of the hospital in the first place.

A judge ruling that photography or DJing is an "essential service" and is bound by law is absurd.

The photog got in trouble for not doing something she was hired to do.

According to the article, they weren't hired, but just refused their business. So, they didn't take the job and still got hosed.

There are deeper questions in there. Such as "Can you say NO to doing a wedding for a bride or groom that you DO NOT want to have as a client?" Take race, sexual orientation , etc. out and if they want you and the date is open, can you say NO? And if you can, why would it change if they WERE a protected class. And if you can't say no, then some may have an issue if they are the DJ of choice and a B/G decides to sue because you didn't want them.

Well, I highly doubt they would do that, but I really wouldn't care much.

But I could easily book myself to do my own backyard party, or book myself on a vacation day at the beach, etc... Being booked does not necessarily mean a gig -- it's basically a prior commitment, whatever you want to call it. Maybe I'll want to get my haircut by Zohan that day... :)

The OP said "just becuase they are gay" Based on that comment, that is discrimination and the only reason behind my comment.

I just think there are so many other reasons to get out of gigs instead of just plain old being a homophobe.....I'm booked, I do not travel that far, will be out of town that weekend, gear has scheduled maintence that weekend, if it's an outdoors wedding just say you don't play outdoors. Its a ton of excuses that a dj should be able to pull out of his @$$ before using the clients sexual orientation as the reason they cannot perform at thier wedding.

My thoughts are if you advertise your business/service to the open public then your services should be available to the open public. If you are a Christian DJ then advertise yourself as one and I would think gay people would be smart enough to steer clear of your services.

You can't deny them service becuase they are gay and still label yourself a Christian, I mean isn't that passing judgement and a good christian never passes judgement (YEAH RIGHT!) Do you know how many gay people are in church choirs??? Me neither but I know its a large amount :triwink: If the pastor isn't stopping them from singing then you shouldn't stop them from having a nice reception.

For those who would turn down gay people: Do you research each couple and refuse the couples who have past domestic violence records or cheaters becuase you do not believe that mariage will last, no, you dont give a rats @s$ as long as they have the money to pay for your services.
 
To the so called Christian dj's:

WWYD if you were booked for "Stacy's Sweet 16" and for months you talked/planned with the parents only to arrive and get all set up to find out that Stacy is actually thier son. Are you going to shut down and pack up?

You guys aren't marrying the gay couples so I don't see the big deal.

So the law says we can trample the religious person's faith to satisfy the protected group.

And I asked the deeper question, because we actually don't know (based on the account) how the photographer told the couple they would not do the ceremony. It may have been an excuse like "I'm already booked", when one of the lesbians knew they weren't and brought the charges. I asked it because the judge ruled the photographer an "essential service" .. who's to say DJing wouldn't be in some judges hand. And as such, ANY excuse may not fly in court if it's to get out of a gig we didn't want, but happened to be for a "protected class".
 
I would think a die hard Christian wouldn't want be a dj to begin with. All the bumping and gyrating we cause on the dance floor couldn't be christian like either. Alcohol at a majority of events and other stuff they wouldn't approve of. Not to mention the music most crowds would want played wouldn't be christian like. Goes back to me saying that christian dj's should advertise themselves as such or just hang up the headphones.
