Transferring music laptop to laptop

Either that, or dock the Zune to a couple inexpensive, powered speakers. I usually use my iPod Touch (the shuffle play works better on it then my Zune).

I have a neat little EOS system (had two, sold one to the kid) -- it's wireless, so you can keep it in the house (on the main unit with nice sound), and plug the remote speaker anywhere. You can dock an iPod directly, or simply attach the Zune to the extra port. It's a decent sound on the remote speaker, which just plugs into any outlet.
 
Or VDJ Free version. :)
 
Yup, just create a folder on an external called Music transfer folder or whatever, then copy your performance laptop library to it. Next, copy it to the new laptop.

Forget the cable, I have one and while it is GREAT for small tranfers, I don't think I'd trust it to copy my entire library.

Well they may be moving out of France if the new guy decides to tax them as he said in his campaign so many businesses will shut down and leave, guess there will be a white flag shortage in the near future :D:D:D:D:D:D

The free version is no nags. It just won't support fancy sound card, controller (other than keyboard) and 2nd display.

How many gigabytes are we talking about here? I've got my entire collection on a WD MyBook 1tb drive. I have this backed up to two other 1tb external drives. I would never even consider going to a gig with anything less than my entire collection. (with two of the drives in case one fails.)

C'mon, what are the odds yer gonna play Harmony - Elton John at a gig? None, zero, zilch, nada -- it ain't gonna happen!

There's no reason to carry it with you, or use an external drive. You can fit everything you need on your internal drive, and then some. How many songs are you gonna play at a gig -- maybe 40-60. All that extra stuff is simply baggage, that slows down your software.

Take the time to cherry pick -- it pays off in the long run... :)
 
Purchased an Easy Transfer Cable for Windows 7 by Belkin. Going to use it to transfer what I need from OLD laptop to NEW laptop. External HD is always current. I have another external USB powered 100 gb HD that I will mirror the 1TB external HD (E:\music folder).
Have not used it yet, but it does allow for one to see on each Laptop the files for you to transfer.

I need to get ALL the files in OtsAV DJ Pro that are on my OLD laptop (OML) to the NEW laptop so I can do a complete re-link and easy scan of the files in my External HD. I have some files on the External that have a path to the OLD Laptop's C:\My Music. I need to get those "moved" to the External E:\Music and then re-link the E:\Music external HD (1TB).

I like the idea putting "Best of" folders in my NEW Laptop's internal drive...to eliminate carrying all those extra CDs with me for "just in case" the laptop and/or Ext HD crash. Might even consider a folder "Current Top 40" folder and update that once a month. When I do "teen" parties it's the Top 40 and Urban charts that kids ask for. A tough folder would be Best of Country because of the number of years. In OTS I can't do a Category called Country and then have a sub-category "1960's, 1970's, etc." OTS only allows only so many "categories" something like 300 (?). For weddings, I create a Category for that date and copy the Reception Music Play List there for ease of locating the music. Works for me. However, I do need to begin removing those categories so I always have plenty of Categories left to create.
 
I agree .. If you have 2 laptops, each with the same library, you should be covered for anything. Going external means having to make sure you always get the same drive letter assignments so pointers work .. and you have a slower connection than you would with an internal drive.

Use an external to truly backup your entire system, but use a second hot laptop for live backup use in case of failure. If a laptop fails, all the external drives in the world won't help anyway.

If you use laptops for DJing, they should be on a business replacement cycle, which is generally around 3 years. Move the most recent laptop to backup use and retire the old backup.

This is why I am looking for a dedicated notebook for gigs. The need to consolidate. Besides, with an Internet connected venue, I can fulfill ANY request. ;)

I don't do requests much (I can be bribed with the right amount of cash though). :)

I get paid to play the right music for the event. I couldn't care less what Joe Drunk or Titty Mary wants to hear. I'm doing a show, so stay away from my stage, and go drink some more at the bar. If somebody hires me for a job, I'm not at the beck and call of every idiot that walks up.

If you want to be a human jukebox -- feel free. Might just as well rent them one, and I'll be happy to sell you the software that runs it :)

My preference to have my entire collection with me has nothing to do with Joe Drunk, only with Titty Mary. (jk) And no....I've never had any desire to be a human juke box.

For me it is more about being prepared for ANYTHING. Not sure why you thought it was ONLY for requests from Titty Mary. I'm probably every bit as militant as you seem to be about doing "requests".

The only way a request gets played is if it fits the mood at the time and advances my agenda as the DJ.

My standard reply to requests by the inevitable drunk guy (or gal) is "I'll be playing that later". Inevitably the evening will end and I didn't play the song. On the rare occasion when someone remembers that I didn't play their request and asks me about it, without missing a beat I'll respond with:

"This wasn't my last show. I meant later in my career. You'll just have to make sure you're at my next event in case I play it then."

I'm very picky about what I play though. I like to set a mood (or scene as it was), and engage the folks into a certain experience. For example, I might play 30 minutes of beach/reggae/shag type stuff, to bring their heads to the beach. They'll start remembering their trips to the beach, and start talking to each other about it.

Then I might want to bring them to the 80's dance scene for 30 minutes or so -- then maybe the 90's, maybe the 40's. Essentially, I want to control their emotions for a bit -- maybe bring them to a place they haven't thought about for a while. It's sorta like watching a movie.

I can do that with a small library. No need for 100,000 tracks or whatever.

I have a question for you. See your above statement in red. How can you mirror a 1TB HD with a 100GB HD? Am I missing something here?
