Hi,

I was wondering if any of you use digital requests at a gig? If you do, what did you have the best success with? Text? Twitter? maybe a new program?
I currently use the good old paper and pen, but I figure with the amount of school dances I am doing it might be a good idea to get to the kids with all the technology at hand.

With too many texts you can end up being a Human Jukebox. What happens when you get the text but don't play the song, will you take the time to text back why you did not play it or get pestered by more texts?

I would not go that route because I would want to create a Show with some guidelines (requests) from the client. Depending on texts or getting too many can be detrimental to the Music Agenda.
 
Sorry Steve, had to wait until my son got home to confirm what app it was. The app is called text free. It assigns you a phone number and the text you thru the app. I just tried it and it works! He says make sure you use it at least 1 time a month or they put the number back in a pool.

Although I agree with you, I still want to give it a try. I use paper requests now, and I don't think I ever played every request I got. I don't plan on responding to any of the texts, to me it's just a digital request, that's all.
I feel we all need to evolve and this may be a way to do it. It could end up in disaster, or it could be a wonderful thing. I will give it a try on may 11 and see how it goes.
 
Pretend your at the event and you start getting txts saying you suck.

How will it effect your mood at that event?

Has anyone had negative experiences at a event accepting txts for requests?

You don't want people in via their "smart phones". You need to control the situation, hence a kiosk type computer.

It has a timeout built in (your choice on the time), and yer not gonna get 60 million requests. You force them into coming up to the kiosk, and actually making a decision, instead of just texting via their phone.

So, at a teen event you actually want them to leave the dance floor to make a request when just as easily they could whip out a cell phone.... log into some sort of portal being served by a host computer that is completly secured next to the DJ?

On a side note.... I used FireText last Saturday and it takes requests via Text Msg... but, it's not a free option... it cost me, between the software purchase, USB doggle and t-mobile Sim, $420 as an initial investment.... I sell it as an addon for $250 so in two gigs my ROI will be $80 and future ROI will be 100% profit.
 
An old laptop on a small table to the side of the DJ booth will work. No need to have them too far from the dance floor. I'm going to use something similar for karaoke. You can pickup a useable laptop for less than $150.

I thought that was the purpose of Karaoke Slips? You guys are unconsciously taking away the personal human interaction.
 
The issue is having to reprint copies of the song list (now over 100 pages) every time I add stuff. With the request station, it uses the same catalog as the KJ program, so it's always up to date. I don't mind the personal touch .. it's just some people don't know what they want and like looking through the book .. electronic will be cheaper.

It's not the "request" .. it's the search.

Its a cost of doing business. What happens when someone spills a drink on the other laptop and now there is no place to go to select songs? If you add songs to the Karaoke Library, add them in a separate folder so you can make a couple pages addendum to your printed list. One a year or every two years, you can redo the entire library into one folder and redo all the books. I divide my books by Title and then by Song. For each category, they are further divided into 4 books by Alphabet Order. So I end up with 8 smaller books, each one different.

There's a bar out in San Jose, CA that has been using a Karaoke Request kiosk of their own design now for many, many years.... it's a touch screen system...... So, worrying about spilliage isn't an issue.... I mean really if it was we never would have gone to Digital Jukeboxes and the bars would still be using {gulp} jukes that play vinyl 45's.... so, accedental spillage isn't much of a concern if the setup is done right.
 
Despite whatever else may be digital - I am not. I'm still a human being and if you take the time to come speak to me it will go a long way to getting your request played. If you could text me a request it would mean nothing to me - how do I know if you're even in the room? How do I know if you're a dancer or a wallflower?

A requested shouted out from a participant on the dance floor always takes priority over some wallflower critic typing in the corner.
