Did ya ever go to a concert, and watch a huge act like Van Halen? Do you think those amp stacks are real?

At most, Eddie is using two amps piggyed, the others are empty, but put there to make it look cool. So we use empty boxes in most cases, to present some sort of "wall of sound" look. It impresses people, even though it's not plugged in, or has any components inside it.

LOL you haven't been backstage at a big show. PA baby! You'd see some stacks of Dollars/Crowns. Go see the FOH mixing boards! Wowee!

Exactly. Most of those are fake, empty boxes. Gene may actually be going straight thru the board. If I recall correct, Paul and Ace were using single stacks, but had huge setups behind them, with the innards gutted, to make them easy to move.

You should have seen some of these setups. Most of the big arena bands rehearsed their tours at a huge hanger at the airport near my house. We'd help roadie for food and beer, and get to meet all the band folks. We even got to jam on occasion. :)

They all had great PA systems (put in by a local company, depending on where they were), but most of the gear on stage was faked, to make it easy to carry, lightweight for transport, and quick to setup.

The Stones had their own PA, and Brian May was the only one I recall using 6 real amps (VOX of course). But a good portion of the stuff were stage props -- just like in the movies.
 
Yup I remememer seeing that at a Marty Stuart concert years ago. On stage, behind the performers were huge stacks of Fender gear. An endorsement, I suppose... Stuart played a vintage Strat.

The Fender stacks were stage props. There's no way you can use a vocal mic in front of a rig like that. The performers were patched into the house system.

On a side note, my father-in-law recalled George Jones, Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner and many others doing concerts behind the town Legion back in the '60s. They had a makeshift outdoor stage back there and hard, wooden benches for the audience to sit on. The performers played through a pair of ancient 15" 2-way boxes set on stage, powered by an old tube amp.

It was all they needed.
 
as i read this thread i say some folks just have never seen a REAL BIG rig in operation yet.some of us need to check out Val and some others who roll in a tractor trailer with the REAL deal in equipment and power house sound.
