Crown CE2000 and 2 QSC RMX here....lol.. It ain't much but they've been very dependable. Yes, heavy but DJing is my excercise....and kids I suppose.....and making kids I suppose.

John, keep in mind he was saying tube amps. Speaking on instrument amps a 50-watt tube was general equal to 200-watts of solid state. Pair up a modest-wattage tube amp to an efficient speaker and you've got some sweet tone, IMHO and lots of volume.

But, the old Onkyo I used for most of my DJ career, was solid state. Heavy as heck, but it kicked some butt
I dropped that puppy sooo many times, I can't even remember.
It never failed me. Unfortunately, it sits somewhere in NY, having not been able to fit into rather expensive (and small) moving cube. If anybody finds it, go for it, and use it. It's yours, and will probably go another 30 years...
I have a new Onkyo I use here as a pre-amp (or full amp for TV). It runs into a Yaqin hybrid amp, which has a 4 tube pre-amp stage, coupled to a MOSFET output stage. The tubes I got from the Rusky guy are hot, and punch the output, without distorting.
In all honesty, and with complete humility -- I could blow most of your systems out of the water, with a pair of Polk speakers. It's not the cost of the products, nor the name on the tag. It's how you put the system together, and use the proper parts...
I welcome anyone to come down here and listen -- and we'll mess with a 1,000 neighbs at the same time (you pay the moving fees)
If one is using regular two way full range DJ Speakers they might be overkill. If one is using JBL Vertecs, JBL SRX 728s, Cerwin Vega Earthquakes, JBL Scoops, Growlers etc they are the right tools for the jobs.
Isn't that one of the reasons they make rolling racks? What is so hard in rolling a rack?
Still need to lift the rolling racks up and down into/out of the SUV ... I used to have Crest amps .. just 2 of them were about 95# .. the 3 QSCs are 62#. I don't have a ramp rear door.

If a lappy, a couple powered speakers, and a small sub will do the job -- why not use it...?

I guess the analogy I'm trying to make is this:
If I can can use a phillips screwdriver to put the bell on my bicycle -- do I need to go to Home Depot, and buy a powered driver to do the same thing...?

I will tell you why! I am doing a St. Patrick's Day Gig at a Club next week Saturday. I'll tell you how I got the Gig and will soon take over Karaoke nights at that place. Most Karaoke DJs use two powered speakers and a small 4 channel Mixer . The Guy who is presently there is doing just that except he has one speaker on a tripod and the other on the floor, facing the singer. He was running in Stereo. It sounds like crap! Honestly!
A few weeks ago I roll in with my rig, not even the full big rig. It was like night and day.The people loved it and are asking for me to be the KJ.
There are certain common characteristics that I see in lots of DJs.
Most want the bare minimum.
Most are cheap.
Most are hobbyists who don't know what they are doing. (They are not in it as a business)
Most are mediocre.
I strive to be above all of the above. I do NOT want my sound to be like the one of a regular DJ, especially in a Bar or Club. Most Clubs have better sounding Jukebox sound than some of those DJs. I don't have to argue about the money I demand because the Client can see and hear the difference between the other DJs and myself. Story told, it works!

alas, you buy your cables from the dollar store, buy $59 light fixtures and run Behringer gear (not exactly high end)........Heck if we believed that you were making this outrageous rate (you don't have to argue about the money you demand), why do you have 2 other jobs?
What was the old KJ getting per night? How much are you going to get? oh wait a minute...they haven't hired you yet.....

I'm sorta curious why a DJ would need say 2,000 watts per side, and whether those numbers are even close to real...?
I've been in this business a long time, and most gigs I did with 150 watts per side (outdoors I bi-amped, with another 60 per side on top). You can easily handle a couple hundred people with that, without breaking a sweat.
Maybe it's just a gear thing for some folks, but just get good, efficient speakers -- and you can rock the world without 60 million watts of power...
Good point Rick. I run exclusively JBL SRX passives, and I amp them according to JBL's recommendations. The Crowns I own are touring class amps. Sure, they cost me....however they are ultra-reliable and I plan to have them for a long time. The K2's are ancient in the scheme of things now, and have a fanless design. The MA 2402's and 5002 are heavy, however with proper power in a big room when needed I have no worries, and get complements on the sound at every gig I run them at. The lightweight I-Tech I got a great deal on...these are easy to move.......I just can't bring myself to part with the older big-iron Crowns. Although the modern stuff still packs the punch I like.....there's just something in big-iron sound that the rail switchers just ain't got.
All I'd like is more opportunities to put 'em thru their paces.

Well, Rick's right to a point. Unless you're DJing at or running sound for large audiences and need wall-rattling sound, the big FOH rigs will gather dust.
We built up a decent FOH rig years ago with big iron amps and marketed for it. But the upscale market, your weddings and such didn't require it. And when the economy went to pot, so did the market.

Did ya ever go to a concert, and watch a huge act like Van Halen? Do you think those amp stacks are real?
At most, Eddie is using two amps piggyed, the others are empty, but put there to make it look cool. So we use empty boxes in most cases, to present some sort of "wall of sound" look. It impresses people, even though it's not plugged in, or has any components inside it.
Just sayin'...
