What is cheesey or mediocre DJ?

I saw someone post about a multi op that had cheesey or mediocre DJs. I was just wondering what do you think that is?

I personally hate DJs that can't put down the mic. They won't shut up and let us hear the music. I know that all DJs are not the same and we all don't have or should have the same style. I understand that we all have our different taste when it comes to DJs and some don't like or feel that a DJ is a real DJ unless they can play the latest hip hop song that just came out yesterday.

I'm one of those DJs that playing today's hip hop and r & b isn't something that i do. I've got bashed on another site for not being that DJ and being looked at as not being a real DJ because i don't play that stuff. Hell i don't understand most of it and all i hear is that to me most of them sound alike.

I realize some are just getting started and don't know all that some of us veterans know. I also know that some will get better or some will just remain the same. I try to not to be too hard on a DJ that i know is just starting out. My attitude is we all had to start somewhere and as you keep going you should learn from your mistakes as to what to do and what not to do. What are your thoughts.

Those of us that are veterans know that the show is not about what you want to hear. It is about what your guests want to hear. If it means playing todays music, then so be it. If it's Mozart, then so be it. We are mobile, versatile, adaptable and all have our own styles and personalities.

In my book, it's anyone that posts or talks smack about other DJs that don't fill their definition.
 
A cheesey dj has only one reggae song he plays at a wedding and its Bob Marleys One Love.
A cheesey dj always plays Kenney G at a wedding.
A cheesey dj thinks he has to bring turntables and a 100,000 trance mp3s to a wedding.
A cheesey dj thinks dubstep is great for the first song after the father/daughter dance.
A cheesey dj thinks that itunes or winamp is proper dj software.
A cheesey dj thinks unedited hip-hop is ok at a church formal.

Please add to the list....
 
Following the Z mans idea, if you:

have only one reggae song to play at a wedding and its Bob Marleys One Love.
always plays Kenney G at a wedding.
bring turntables and 100,000 trance mp3s to a wedding.
think dubstep is great for the first song after the father/daughter dance.
think that itunes or winamp is proper dj software.
think that unedited hip-hop is ok at a church formal.

You might be a redneck

To the DJ that posted about the event being about what the guest want and not what you want. That's partly true but first you need to find out what the client wants for music since they are footing the bill. Now I say that if it's music that you don't know, are not comfortable with or don't have a lot of it then you need to say to the client that you feel you're not the right DJ for the job and to look for someone else to do the job.

Partly true? Isn't your client one of the guests at the show? Absolutely agree that if the client wants something you won't deliver, then pass on the show - but if you're there and a guest / client asks for song A and you just don't feel like playing it, then that's on you. Unless you've been directed by the client to not play certain songs, then you have no reason to not play them - especially not for the reason listed. We're not hired to play what we want to hear.

I never refuse to play a song that someone request unless it's inappropriate for that event.

My partners son is 12 years old and is a DJ. I did my best friends friends and family day cookout. He wanted to play that day but i had to tell him no because he plays booty shaker club. And that wouldn't work because they would have immediately told me to stop him from playing.
 
Actually i refuse to do an event that they want gangsta rap. It's got to be clean stuff and i feel we're going to safe or we just won't do it.

I think most of us play clean stuff. There is rap (all forms) that is clean.

I think most of us play clean stuff. There is rap (all forms) that is clean.

I don't and when it comes to that i make sure i have a DJ that knows that stuff and can play it.

and here lies my question - once again.

If you do not, then what pray tell happens when you're at a show and the guest / client / whomever is asking / telling you to play song A, being that you refuse to play song A because it's modern hip hop.

I didn't say I refuse to play it. I will have someone else there that has that type of music, knows what it is and understands it. I don't know a whole lot of those artist that are coming out and that music changes up so fast that it's hard to keep up with the latest hit hip hop song because they change up soooo much that it's hard to keep up. Unless you have a subscription to a site that you can get latest hip hop song.

I know I could use one of those sites to keep up with the latest stuff but right now we're not making a ton of money and having gigs all over. So i can't justify spending that money each month right now.

I just really want to get this site up and running.

I think you missed it again. How would you know to have someone else there? Do you plan the entire evenings songs before you get to the show? How would you possibly know what a guest wants to hear before you are playing the venue? Most of us have no idea what course an event will take nor how a show will turn out. Based on all that, how could you possibly have a successful show with a limited library / knowledge?

A subscription to a music service would alleviate alot of your 'hard to keep up with' issues - and save you money in the long run. Also, it takes money to make money. Considering you just bought a bunch of stuff, you have / had money. Sometimes its all in how you prioritize things.
