There is usually a big difference between Mobile DJing and Club DJing... You will probably have to choose one or the other. Doing both is possible, but in my opinion doesn't usually work well. Mobile DJ's usually aren't good club DJ's (no offence guys) and Club DJ's aren't usually good Mobile DJ's. I am a clubs DJ... and while I CAN do some mobile gigs, most of these guys here would make me look silly. REALLY silly. At the same time, there aren't a lot of people that can contend with a good club DJ when he/she is in their element. There are just a lot of things that Club DJ's do that Mobile DJ's don't, and vice versa.
What attracts you to DJing the most? Cutting/scratching and beatmixing? Having a killer setup and rocking the crowd? Running an event, or wedding?

Thanks for the replies. Really helps. Sounds like a direction I was going for DJSyntax. Beatmatching and getting into clubs. I would like to be well rounded and be able to do mobile gigs too. I would definitely like to utilize the system I have which consists of an Allen & Heath Xone 42 mixer, (2)Pioneer Cdj 900's, and EV LiveX 115p and 118p speakers. I'm currently looking into joining the adja and getting insurance, cases, bags, etc. Also, figuring out how to get the gear around.

As I was going to say, I am usually the one who blabs the most when it comes to club stuff, as I have worked in tiny clubs to huge clubs, intimate after-sets to sold out concerts... for about 17 years now. Been a DJ for 21, almost 22 years. So I have seen almost everything there is to see when it comes to clubs, and I am really free with any answers and advice. So anything you want to know about club stuff, I will jump in and answer for sure, and give you the best advice I can. On the flipside, there are 92873248372 DJ's on this board who are so much better than me when it comes to mobile DJing that it makes me look silly to even attempt to answer... but that usually doesn't stop me lol.
So hopefully we'll be able to try to keep you in that middle path you are trying to ride. I have to tell you again though... one usually ends up dominating the other. If you want to do clubs, you usually have to sacrifice doing mobile gigs, and vice-versa. You really stepped up on the mobile side already though with planning on getting insurance and all that. Do you have any sort of business plan? Or is it more of a take it as it comes type thing right now?

Thanks a lot DJynxx. I appreciate all the help I can get. I'm all ears (pardon the pun) please, blab away. I really want to club dj. If that takes over, great. Of course, I'll be happy doing whatever Djing I can. I want to make sure I have insurance on the equipment, in case anything happens. The other thought was maybe setting up at a bar and having some kind of electro lounge or trance night.
That would be a great start. You can also try to be an opening DJ at a club, try to learn all you can from talking to/watching other DJs.
Yes, I'm going to do that. I see what you mean about the focus though. A younger friend of mine is getting married in April. He and his fiance want me to dj. There planning on 300 people! Help! I may need to private message you DJ Jynxx!

If you were doing a club for 300 people I would totally be down, but I am soooo not the wedding DJ. I have done a lot of them, but almost always it was for the "club experience" at their weddings.
How long are you DJing for? Did you scope out the venue and try to talk to the other vendors yet? You should always try to coordinate as much as you can with everyone so that everyone is on the same page... I know that much. I can still help you if you would like, but there are people FAR more capable than I on this board

No problem. They may want a more "clubby" feel anyway. I figured I need the classic mainstream stuff(whatever that is) until later in the night. I have to see what songs they want. I told them to get a an experienced pro wedding dj, but they think it will fun, if I do it. Great experience for me, but the last thing I would want to do is even remotely think of messing up their "special day".
I have done a few weddings DJ8 and let me tell you its the easiest money ever.... IF.... you are prepared. The bride and groom will tell you what they want. Make sure to have them fill out a sheet saying what they want played and when s far as father/daughter dance mother/son etc etc. If you don't have the sheet let me know and I can email you one. At a wedding the main thing is keep everyone happy. Take requests and play them. Trust me.. they will tell you what t play.. and have a list of music lthat has been ok'd ready
I am sorry to butt heads with you Direkt, but one, most weddings are *not* easy money. Every wedding I have ever done I had to work my ass off to get right, from preparations to execution. The biggest thing I can say DJ8, is that you will learn right away (and usually the hard way) that you can NOT, in fact, make *everyone* happy. You will almost always have someone who doesn't like what you are doing.... but as long as the Bride and Groom are having fun, thats what really matters.
I really wish I could give you better advice, but I have only done a handful of weddings compared to the guys on here that do it weekly. I wish some of them would chime in *HINT FREAKING HINT*

It's a huge responsibility. I'm sure these kinds of threads by noobs, such as myself, are the bane of the established veteran wedding dj's. I can see why, because of the potential cluster, and subsequent harm to the image of the profession. Nevertheless, I will soldier on. You have been a great help DJ Jynxx. I will be spending considerable time in the wedding forum.
I think it would be best to keep your options open . Why not be both club & mobile dj? The mixing skills you learn from doing clubs can be invaluable for mobile work. Mobile DJ work is not all about weddings. Their are a host of possibilities like 21sts, Company functions, Kids parties , etc etc. The scope of work & the music is extremely broad. The definitive tastes of the guests can be extremely broad too! For example week to week one night may be all top 40 music the next is a mix of old school & new music.
Club deejaying can also be vast & varied too a lesser degree , many clubs play one style but others may have nights where its a different flavour.
A key point is to ask yourself musically where does your passion lie. If your preference is broad & open & you love lots of different music styles then go with mobile deejay work.If its limited to a particular style be it hip hop , r&b, dub step or whatever then club work would be your best option.
I have had deejays that have been solely into house music & made the mistake a couple of times sending them out to a wedding function . Even though i supplied the cross section of music required for the event , there passion wasn't there & they didn't enjoy what they were doing in playing old school party music.
So again where your musical passions lie should determine your deejay direction.

I am finding atleast in my location Toronto Canada that I am becoming more and more a Club like DJ as many of my functions require a more mixed club like feel even if it is old school club.
You are correct! Weddings are only ONE segment of the Industry. However they still do fall into the Mobile Category. It is easier for a Club DJ to do a Wedding than the reverse. Not all Clubs limit themselves to one Genre of music either, so a good deal of experience in Music can come from such Clubs.
