My partner was in this store some where and ran across a camcorder. It was a great deal! He got it for $12.00. It's an old Sony that takes mini VHS tapes but what a deal anyway. All he had to do was buy a battery and charger for the battery. He says the pictures is very good. It's just awful big but it does work. Moral to this story is just because you're in one of those stores doesn't mean you can't run across a great deal like this. Anybody remember running across a great deal like this?
 
Hopefully you can still find the correct new blank tapes to use in it, but I doubt it.

Maybe a search on CL?

Mine are for sale for $1000 each -- they are slightly used though, and feature footage of my ex stripper gal pal, a number of her very hot friends, and me -- on my boat, at a secluded beach, and at our house... :)

It's big, it's old, and it may or may not work. You won't know until you buy a battery and charger for it, and then track down some tapes. The video that you shoot with it will be standard-def, but that doesn't matter because you won't be able to upload it to the web without some time-consuming conversion work.

No thanks.

Moral of the story: Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's a good deal.
 
It's a good deal because it works. I understand what you're saying. Sometimes the risk isn't worth it. He just lucked up on this.

That remains to be seen, now, doesn't it.

I have a digital camera that looks BRAND SPANKING NEW. But it doesn't work. Does your partner have any interest? BTW, a charger and a battery "could" cost over $100. If so, that deal SUCKS. You can buy a brand new HD recorder that will kick the crap out of what he bought for $150. And it will be current technology. You LITERALLY could not give that away to charities near me.
 
I have an VHS camcorder and I'll give somebody $12 to come by the house and take it off my hands.

Since I've gone digital, I havent looked back.
 
The one i have takes mini DVD's and it takes still pictures too. It's a few years old but i decided to not buy an HD one for now, save the money and use the one i have.

If you plan on using it to shoot video it may be the wrong road but if you are looking for a collectors item you might have lucked in...The downside is in might be hard to find the correct charger for the unit

My old RCA VHS would rival any studio camera at the time for picture and sound quality. I shot many a wedding on that camera and even looking back at some of them now they aren't bad, not HD quality but not bad. It would have been considered ENG quality at the time. I still have it kicking around here

I also owned at one time a 3/4 inch Beta cam I bought at a yardsale with two recorder packs and a box of tapes for $25.00. I wound up selling it for $650 a few years later to a collector...

So to make a long story short it really depends on your intentions for the purchase

What are you talking about? I just decided to not spend money on a new one i couldn't afford right then and use the one i had that i actually hardly used. It works great and i can easily get the mini DVD disc for it.

Don't think i didn't want another one. I brought the one i have now after selling the one i had that took tapes. Anyhow they keep coming out with something new. If you keep chasing after the next new thing you'll stay broke.

How wrong you are.

If you're the first DJ in your area to have the next new thing, you can make gobs of money with it before your competitors catch on. This is why I've thrown lots of money at wireless battery-powered DMX uplighting and moving heads in the past six months. I've made all of my money back already, before I've even needed to set everything up. Yes, new products and technology will always be available. The trick is to know what's coming, how you can use it, and how much you can sell it to your clients for.
 
You're right about buying stuff that you can upsell to clients and make your money back. I was just thinking of gear to specifically DJ with or buying stuff you really don't need or can use. The trick is knowing what will work and what won't.
