OK Lighting Experts,

What will I need to buy to be able to follow a performer on stage with a spotlight or wash? Is there some kind of joystick device that will work with software? What do you use, if any?
 
I also use freestyler with a moving head for spotlighting. I use my mouse, its one of those kind with the trackball where your thumb goes. Takes a lot of practice its not as easy as it sounds. In freestyler you can slow down the speed of the movement of your moving head so that will help prevent your movement from being jerky.
 
What about the spotlight/wash itself. Recommendations?

Which spot do you use?
 
That all depends on how bright of a spot you want/need. For me I'd want nothing less than a Spot, if LED, with RGBW in it and one that is as bright as say the Chauvet LED260. Right now I've only got a couple of MinSpots and they are bright.... but, bright enough for a follow spot????

Joker is correct, it all depends on what you need for the event. When you're talking about a spotlight i'd want the most powerful light i could afford. If you have or can afford a 575 watt head then that would be perfect but a 250 watt fixture like the Chauvet Intimidator spot 250's would work for most applications.
 
^^^^ also dont count out the new martin 350 (its pricey as hell but plenty bright) as a spot, for a cheaper solution Id go with either chauvet 260 or maybe a platnium 5R. Either way your gonna need a controller to use them and get the best result.
 
The Martin MAC 350 Entour is probably the Best LED moving head, but at a hefty cost. I really wanted to pick two of them up but I am holding off. I figure its martins first MAC Spot LED so I will wait till they have had a bit more time before I spend that kind of coin on a moving head. I loved my MAC 250's but hated the buld replacment cost.

As far as the auto tracking, I rather use a joystick, the mouse was always alot of work to do it right and seemed jerky compared to a joystick movement.

I have my new 260's arriving today and plan on testing them out to see if they are bright enough for followspot duties.
 
DJBklyn I can speak from experince and the 350's work flawlessly, used them for a concert indoors and they blew everything away and where about as bright as a 2k. Also Terri Clark is carrying 8 of them on her tour. Trust me they're worth every penny, and remember Martin doesnt rush products out like some other companies.

I did not mean they would have issues ( I have had plenty of Martin lights, in addition to my MAC 250's I had Pro 918's & 812's), I am just expecting that they are going to be adding some more features now that they have the LED technology locked down to get the Lumens needed.
 
well your in Ontario and I was trying to see if you are near GTA and Google brought up a Mike from Sunshine was thinking it might be you. Where in Ontario are you Im in Missisauga
