Hi all,
I am going to be upgrading to line arrays, which as you all may know, are insanely expensive, but i have found these ones that look like a good deal. it appears to be essentially 4 line arrays perminantly mounted together and are able to be adjusted for angles. you can put up to 4 together and they are 8 ohms 600 watts (Oh and they look pretty kick ass :D ). id like to purchase (eventually since money, sadly, doesnt grow on trees) 4 (1 bieng the 4 units together) sets and hang 2 sets each side. of my rig from trussing. What would your thoughts be on this product? would this product perform well in a dj environment?

PS: i have made up my mind about using line arrays in geneeral, please do not tell me i shouldnt use line arrays or that i could achieve better sound if... etc etc, thanks. :)
 
TOA.

I'd want to hear these long B4 I threw my $$$$$ at them. I wouldn't touch those with a ten foot pole. Line arrays are worthy if you feel the need. Stick with a major player in the Biz and start saving now. These TOA's you're just gonna bleed cash into something with no lasting value or decent sound quality.

Well i've never used these so i cannot personally honestly tell you if it would be a smart purchase or not. If it helps you, i found a nice review about these that makes them sound interesting. http://www.svconline.com/mag/avinstall_toa_hxbfbb/ If you end up pulling the trigger and getting a pair of these i would be curious to hear your personal review. had TOA speakers in a Cantina lounge in So Cal many yrs ago and I was very impressed what they could do for a very compact setup. The review sounds interesting and at around 2500 you would have a very unique look for your mobile DJing events that would set you apart from the typical 2 low end powered speakers on sticks DJ which are a dime a dozen in most citys of the western hemisphere.

Agreed completely. I think the look of these is the biggest benefit, if they do really sound great then for small parties this would definitely be something to make you stand out.

That was one of the main points of my decision to go line array style. no one but boom entertainment around here even uses line arrays, and im trying to market to the schools that couldnt afford to pay $30,000 - $40,000 for 1 dance.

Another reason being that most school dances are going to usually be in gyms which are the WORST ever spaces for reverb, and line arrays are great for reducing that!

Im serously considering buying a pair. worst case, they dont work for gyms and i can use them to stand out at sweet 16s and stuff.

Toa is a very respected brand. Those little arrays have had good reviews. Since they are so light you could rig them to work on a standard tripod. A set of these and some subs would make a nice system

You all can call me skeptical, and I'll stay that way. The review linked, can anyone point me to a bad review on this site? :read2:

I'm old-school, and staying that way. TOA is a paging/music/musak style that builds for permanent installs. I'd like to read a review for these where a mobile DJ used 'em every weekend for a year, at a good level, and could then say they were viable without repair.

I've got an assortment of last gen JBL SR-X series, most of which are at least 10 years old. Except for replacing a pair of tweeter diaphragms in my 4732X's due to my own fault, NONE of these has required anything more than cleaning. When they are used, they are not babied either.

Call me biased, I'll agree! I hope the original poster is well-pleased in the end.

good list except the bose 802s. my uncle has 4 for his band (2 were II series, other 2 were III series) that he let me use once. NEVER AGAIN. those sound horrendous in any dj environment. they are all treb with no mid or bass response. they sounded like total garbage. for anyone considering these these are great for vocals or pa, but don't waste your money if you plan too use them as tops.

If you know how to use them they do just well.
Did you use them with their controller or did you try and use them as full range expecting a lot of bass? Without their controller they do sound like crap.
I use them in six ways:
1. As Tweeters Only in a three way network configuration.
2. As Midrange Only in a three way network configuration.
3. As Mid/Highs only in a Two way network configuration
4. As fill in a zoned area.
5. As stage monitors.
6. As Full range in smaller areas like Restaurant banquet rooms or homes or pool parties.
In all these applications they perform very well for me. You cannot expect a booming high SPL bass line from these boxes as they will surely disappoint. However, they have excellent clarity for mids and highs.

Integration and processing can do wonders for the right configurations.

Yeah i think ill get the tripod mounting option so i can use them as my small setup for like school cafeteria promos and stuff and then get the rigginfg frame for suspending 1 on each side from the cieling. i also talked to a structural engineer in my area, he said that since the units+ mounting hardware only way around 45lbs, cert rigging points dont have to be used, they wouldnt put enough stress on the cieling to cause a problem. I WOUL however use as close to the rigging points as possible, as well as a rigger. Never do anything without one!

Yeah, i was gonna get different subs then the fb-120s. i heard that they dont do so well in a gym, not enough punch. Any suggestions? im looking for innexpensive (NOT cheap) set of 2 subs that will pack a good punch when used in a gym facing the boundary.

For the price listed and the line array design, the specs don't look bad at all.

True, these guys are marketed to paging and installs; auditoriums, churches and the like. But I don't see why they couldn't be mobile as well. They appear to offer a warm vocal and midrange tone.

Yup, you're gonna need a sub cabinet to accompany them at a high energy show. According to the specs (if I'm reading this right) you'll drop 10dB @ 60Hz with this system.
