What Drove Me??

OK folks, I am back but not back DJing.

I have not set up the gear at the lodge in close to a month and the only thing close has been doing karaoke for the veterans at Perry Point VA Hospital. I do that once a month. Yesterday we had over 42 vets and about half of them sang so it was a pretty good two hours.

Now, the title here is, "What Drove Me?" That is, what drove me as a DJ and what drove me to DJ.

The second question is actually easier to answer; ego drove me to DJ. Like it or not, that is probably the same reason for most of you as well. Think about it; you are either up there in front of everybody or sitting in a booth behind some glass but no matter what, you are in charge. You can say, "I'm just playing music", but, what you play impacts what is happening on the dance floor and, admit it, when that floor is full and they are grooving to what you are laying down then you get a rush. That rush is just not that head rush from the moment, it is an ego boost. And you want more! That rush drove me to DJ.

What drove me as a DJ included what drove me to DJ and several other factors.
1. I enjoy music. But, the last ten years or so have really sucked as far as music is concerned. That is probably one of the contributing factors to me leaving. Yesterday I sat in the lounge of the lodge relaxing and there was a baby shower going on in the lower lounge. They were playing mostly Hip Hop and Rap and I have to tell you that it turned me off. I could not relax and I could not stay, so I left. When I was doing Friday nights at the lodge for a while it was the same way. I would be playing Classic Rock, Southern Rock or Country and somebody would ask for Eminem, Lil Jon, or somebody like that, I'd play it, and my desire to keep playing would go out the window.
2. I enjoyed the planning, especially for weddings. I just liked doing that. I liked working with the client to make their day a great one.
3. I liked working with my clients.
4. I liked coordinating the events.

What I did not like was the administrative end. I hated the marketing and everything that I had to do to get clients. I especially hated those times when I chase clients for days on end only to find out that they hired a DJ for $100 that said they would do exactly what I said I would do for $700 (or whatever).

And, as I said, the modern music started to drive me away. Towards the end I started pursuing older couples but they are few and far between.

Do I miss it? Honestly, some elements I do miss. I will break out the gear from time to time on a Friday night at the lodge and play but, I can almost guarantee you, as soon as the folks start asking for the modern stuff, if I can't get back to the rock or country then I'm shutting down.

Paul:

I don't think I have a niche anymore.

I have been thinking about getting into wedding coordination. That way I can do the part that I enjoy and then let the DJ take over (as it should be) and leave before the crap music of today starts.

Maybe it is just me but I have learned to hate today's music. My wife and I went to a bull and shrimp feast the lodge put on at a local hall and as soon as the hired DJ started drifting into today's music I lost interest in being there. The feast started at 8 and went to midnight. We left at 9:30.

Some people get old. Im a Toys R Us Kid. Paul I have done many car shows over the years and the lowrider group needs representation and wont find Classic Rock and Oldies being played for their benefit.

Brother Tom, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. We've been feeling much the same for years.

That's why we semi-retired. We'll take an upscale show or firehouse dance for the members on occasion. Leave the youth events for younger DJs. My association with current pop music releases disappeared years ago. Heck, I wouldn't know what to play for a teen audience if left on my own. I'd need a playlist.

And even with that, there'd be a train wreck in the making 'cause I don't listen to the new pop music anymore. I'd be standing there motionless because I don't have a feel for the stuff. A comatose DJ ain't nobody's idea of fun.

If there's one thing I despise today it's rap. Rap has ruined countless otherwise decent dance music tracks that could be played for an over-40ish crowd. As soon as that ghetto thug chanting starts, it's done. We lose the audience. And they're the ones who are signing our paychecks. We'd love to play all requests but we've got to consider the consequences of our actions.

For what a paycheck is worth in this crazy biz anymore. I understand the economy is in the toilet lately... but dammit, we can't make money at rates we charged fifteen years ago. The cost of living has gone up for us, too. Nobody wants to pay for it.

It was fun when music was still fun. It was fun when you could make money at it. It was fun when you got referrals... and people actually called you for bookings like they said they would.

Those days are a memory. :)

Ok, who left the mental ward door open?!?!?!?!?!? Mission Control, we have an escapee :D:D:D:D:D:D

;)

Welcome back Tom.

I should have clarified "Classic Car" shows. We have performed Classic, Custom Lowrider and Holy Rollerz (only Christian music allowed) car shows.

Luckily, I've been able to detach myself from listening to music....and playing music at a gig. When i'm listening to music, I love classic rock. I do have a variety of other tastes, but that's my favorite.

When playing music, i play what the crowds wants and couldn't care less if it's something I like or not. I hate the song "teach my how to dougie", would never play it for myself, but the girls love it, so I play it. I find enjoyment in seeing people truly enjoy themselves.

When I'm playing "teach me how to dougie, I'm not really listening to the song...I'm watching the crowd...and deciding on the next song.

I enjoy the sales part of the business. I enjoy having people put their faith in me and then being very appreciative that they got MORE than what was promised.

I didn't enjoy lugging all of the equipment around. Getting smaller equipment and a RnR cart took care of that.

No issues. I just don't like today's music and I can't detach myself from listening as I DJ. See, listening to the music is an integral part of DJing as far as I am concerned.

When I was gigging I would take the time from time to time to screen the music. I did that so I knew what I was playing; to know where the breaks were and where I could mix. As the music got worse the less I screened till it got to the point of playing stuff I never even listened to before. Since it was radio edited the words were gone but the innuendo was still there.

I was working blind with music I hated.

Trouble is Tom, what you really had was Dj Burnout

you had to get to a situation where Djing wasnt as good for you than it was

I said this below ages ago and yet it still applies to most djs

Dj Burnout doesn’t happen as often, if you’re a private party Dj, since your surroundings and audiences
change frequently. But Club Dj's can suffer from severe burnout very quickly.

----- Now here are my top five(5) causes and the solutions to being in a rut (burnout). -----

Cause #1: Maybe too long in the same place (usually 18 months or longer).

Solution:
You’ve been in that place too long. Maybe it’s time to change your venue. When you become too comfortable at a bar, you lose sight of what you’re supposed to be doing there. Some Dj's start getting sneaky; hanging out behind the bar with hotties while playing pre-mixed compilation CD's. In this case, you’re assuming you’re at the club as a social event rather than a job. I would begin looking for a new bar or club gig before your forced out!.

Cause #2: Maybe too many shifts in the same place (usually three hours or more).

Solution:
Cut back before you get fried. I know some guys who would work three or four double shifts a week, and that’s just way too many shifts for the same person on his own. I would do doubles on Thursday and Friday nights, and it was simply too long to be on your feet all night. A lack of energy in the later hours just makes the room seem too quiet and stale and you should be making money for the owners.

Cause #3: Working for the wrong reasons.

Solution:
Some chicks simply dig Dj's (over the years you still see more single djs than married ones), but as I’m sure you already know, that’s not the right reason to become a Dj. Dj's sometime lose sight that they’re in that booth to entertain and pump up the crowd, not pump up their hormones! And it always happens—they’ll end up with a steady girl, and then this job really sucks.

Cause #4: Out of touch (failure to keep up with the “now”). (also see Cause #5)

Solution:
As we get older, we tend to slow down. People stop going out as much. The problem is your crowd isn’t getting older with you, so you’re losing relevancy! You need to go hang out on the other side of the booth once in a while to see what’s really going on. It’s more fun out there anyway!

Cause #5: Getting in a Rut (bored as some will say no wow factor left)

Solution:
Go and do something completely different for several months, see what else you can do that isnt dj related, while looking at some wow factor you can do for when your ready to be on top of your game. Remember burnout is the one way a dj will not return to djing - keep it fresh, keep it original (or reinvent something old again) be unique.

just think about it
you never know what happens

I keep changing my jobs all the time and still dj

right now I am having 12months off djing and doing loads of computer work
more money for one thing and gives me time to write a lot as well

have a great day all

Dennis:

To have burnout you eventually have to have a desire to get back into what burned you out. The last time I set up the gear at the lodge was July 8th, I think, and it was mostly for karaoke. While I am thinking about pulling it out tomorrow, I am leaning more towrds not.

So, when will the desire return?
