"DI" box question?

I'm running a slideshow out of a client's laptop at a wedding. Video will run run from the VGA port to the VGA on a projector.

My question is about audio... I have to come out of the clients ear phone jack on their laptop (1/8) into my Denon 500 mixer (XRL or RCA). The run from their laptop to my mixer is about 40 feet.

The local sound shop says I should use a Behinger DI 600 box.

The question is... What does a "DI" box do and is it the right one for me?

If you have a USB sound card with RCA outs, just pick up a 50' RCA patch cable for $7 from PartsExpress. :)

I've actually run 25' patch cables direct from the headphone jack as well with no problems. 40' shouldn't be an issue. It doesn't sound to me like you need to worry about incredible audio quality in this case...
 
Yeah that sounds easier. Lol The slideshow will not be played on my laptop so I don't know what kind of sound card they have. That's why I'm coming out of the ear phone jack. Never heard of PartsExpress, but I'll do a search.

parts-express.com -- it's a cool site. Every time I go there, I end up spending too much money on all sorts of neat little toys that I don't really need... yorofl:


You'll also need an 1/8" stereo to dual RCA female adapter.

Probably because it will cost you a $1000 in shipping, and they will be held in customs for 9 weeks going into Canada... :sqlaugh:


You can usually find those cables at Wally World or KMart too -- I assume they have those stores in Canada...

You could always grab a 6 footer, and some speaker/zip cable, and splice it together. There's only two conductors on each leg.

Cut the 6 footer in half, and splice in with two 40' lengths of zip cord, and some electrical tape. Good to go for a few bucks :)

Dude, it's a one shot deal -- why invest a lot of time, money and effort into it...?

There's no ROI on building a setup, that he will probably never use again.


BTW, he IS using the other person's sound card -- it's built into the lappy.

The onboard soundcard in the lappy is probably inferior for a run that long. Why is everyone so afraid to spend money on their business? If he isn't making enough to cover the added costs then he isn't charging enough.

There will be no difference between an on board sound card, and an outboard sound card, in that respect.

The headphone out will give him a little higher voltage, which might work to his advantage over the length of the run.


Either way, if it's a one shot deal, why waste the money on a semi expensive setup, for somebodies slideshow...? Do you honestly think they put a lot of effort into the sound quality of said slideshow...?

If so -- I have a bridge in Brooklyn, that I could sell you... :D
