Chauvet LED Gobo Projector Comment

I've received this light and have been following the gobo making instructions on the Chauvet site. I have found that the homemade gobo is not clear and not good enough for DJ's to be selling to clients for their wedding. I've made several on my office computer and have taken them into a office print shop to be printed. They are not clear and the ink is not smooth making some areas faded.

Does anyone know how to solve this problems and how to make the gobo the correct way?

If not I suggest that you don't try and make your own, just buy them made.

I placed my FIRST order with NLFX and was told I should have it by friday, gig is on sunday! I didn't want to take any chances so I had Kat help me design my clients gobo. I will be sure to post a gig log and my experience with it! Keep your fingers crossed for me that I'll recieve both the gobo and fixture in time!

Since the ink is not smooth, would you consider inverting your image? Instead of black background and white text, make your bg white and your text clear. I know thats not as good as just having the name in lights but maybe a temp fix for any gigs you have approaching soon.

I noticed in the video of chauvet demonstrating making your own gobo they dont show an average gobo being made (black bg and simple text) but instead show their colored logo against the clear background.

They are probaly aware of it and thats why they dont use that type of design in thier example.

Any pics of your homemade gobo's in action?
 
I'm not saying that it doesn't work. It shines through good, just not to my standards. I posted my observation in hopes that someone has a better way to create our own gobos.

I've tried it both ways; black on white, white on black. I've even tried coloured gobos. I've discovered that whether you use black or white depends on the colour of the surface (wall or floor) you're going to reflect it on. (This is for home made gobos. So check the hall location for colours.)

I have no pictures. My camera doesn't pick up the colours very good. LOL

I was wondering how it would look if we tried our own made gobos on camera flim. But, I don't know who to imprint it onto the flim.

Any positive thoughts or reviews on this subject would be appreciated.

Abby, I make up the full alphabet on a sheet then take it to Staples and have them copy it, at maximum density, to transparency sheets. It won't fix the issue of the transparency film causing some softening of the light but it's noticeably better on the dark portions. Hope this helps.
 
Transfers?

Ryan, you have Staples copy the alphabet to a transfer sheet. Then you cut out the letters you want and put them on another piece of transfer? How do you put the letters in the machine?

I make up the gobo at home, take the PDF to Staples. They print it onto the transfer sheets and I cut out the circle. Is that what you saying?

I print mind to paper, then take it to the copy center at Staples where they copy it onto transparencies. I just have 15 sheets made up last week. As for putting it into the machine, I'm still using the little Irradiant units. I'm waiting for my 2 Chauvet gobo projectors that are on backorder with Ben. HELLO BEN............................
 
Do you think the fact that Staples copies from your paper original instead of printing from a PDF makes for a better quality?

Your post made me check the status of my order with NLFX and thank god I did. I was told they would be in-stock last week and today it changed to mid June. Now I'm left wondering when I would have been notified if I hadn't asked for a shipping update! I found a retailer who has 6 left in stock if you need yours without waiting any longer. Just pm me since they are not a forum sponsor.

Please accept our apologies... believe me, I wish we made these things (and all the things we sell for that matter). Kat was aware of your need-by date, as you also ordered a gobo from us and she was actually going to notify you today when we found out that they did not ship last week. You just beat us to the punch. I'm glad you found a source that can help you out. I hope someday Chauvet has them back in stock so we can restock our warehouse and fill our many backorders.

Regarding the original question about making gobos for them... rarely have I seen a "homemade" gobo that looks good enough to sell, and that's why so many DJs rely on us for custom gobos. For those that do want to make them at home, I recommend using Rosco iPro film. You'll get much clearer images, much blacker blacks and sharper lines. We offer that film and it is shipping without delay (of course, I probably just jinxed us. LOL)

Apology is certainly accepted, I can't blame you guys since the product was never in stock to begin with. I received excellent service and communication and wouldn't hesitate to order again in the future. Kat went above and beyond with my custom gobo design and that was enough to make me a happy customer. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that the next item I am looking to purchase is already in stock or I do not have a deadline! Thanks for everything, if I didn't have a deadline I would have just waited it out, NLFX has the lowest price out there for this item!

los angeles dj: I agree. How can we solve this problem? Is there a different kind of "stock" we can use or do it a different way? Suggestions?

None of the homemade gobos are going to be as good as the custom steel, so I stick to my recommendation that if you're selling it, sell the real thing. But, if you want to do it at home we sell a special film that works MUCH better. It was designed for this purpose, not an "all purpose" transparency film.

I just got my Chauvet led gobo zoom in yesterday. It appears MUCH brighter than I expected, at least with the steel sample gobo. Ben, can you give me a link to the film product you mentioned?
 
Rick did you not read about the professional use steel gobos as the proper choice for professional appearance? You dont want to do the minimum to get by when your attempting to compete with anyone who might offer like product in your area.
