just found out that the woofer went out on 1 of my zxA5.
Kinda strange...I had the volume control @ 2pm, mixer levels and at 12 o'clock.
I remembered smelling a burning rubber smell and the back of the speaker was
extremely HOT.
Has anyone had issues with the woofer on their zxA5?
they are about 4 months old...

I will take it to Authorized repair center tomorrow...called them earlier and They are backed up...but If I pay a $50 rush, they will check it out within 24hrs....

maybe I should just mail to EV...any suggestions will help...

I'm in Wash DC metro area.

What other equipment were you using in the chain and at what settings were they? Speakers and amps can be overdriven with too high of a signal coming in.

Any Maximizer, Exciter, Wow Effects, etc.? The reason I'm thinking about this is if the clip lights were not coming on, the effects can actually overdrive things and that slaughters drivers.

Probably not the right time to post this, but I think a lot of people are surprised to know that you can blow up a powered speaker, after all the amp is matched to the drivers, right? Watch for my upcoming article in the July Mobile Beat on how and why speaker's fail (and why it's partly our fault and partly that of the music industry itself).

If you bought this speaker from us, please let me know so we can get a replacement sent out to you asap!

I wonder if a limit light would have helped you avoid this issue... the ZXa5's are a great powered speaker but don't have a simple limit light.

update on the woofer out....

I will like thank everyone for their input including Ben @ NLFX and also to bring everyone upto date...
First, I didn't buy the speakers from NLFX, I bought from a local merchant for a slightly cheaper price than what my overall cost will be compared to price quoted by NLFX. I called them when the woofers went out I was told that they don't do loaners and told me that EV don't cover burnt coil.
I decided to take it to an authorized repair center, who said they had to re-cone the woofer, they ordered kits from EV. they said EV wouldn't cover the damage to the woofer. I used the speaker on friday, the woofer worked but was out again by the end of my gig.
What do I do now...I'm really pissed and dissapointed. Speaker is only 4 months old.... Can I send it back to EV?? OR can EV just replaced the woofer???
I was chaged $145 to recone...kit + labor and $50 for RUSH so I can get the speaker for my weekend gig....
Please any suggestions or Advise will be appreciated. thanks...
should I take it back to the authorized repair center OR just mail to EV...

You still have not listed what you are using in the chain and what format are you running, stereo or mono. I hope to Gawd that a reverse "Y" connector is not in the chain.

Since I wasn't the dealer that sold you the speaker, I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment much further on this, but I will just add that EV DOES warranty drivers and I have often been able to assist customers with "game time" needs. The bad news is that they probably won't cover the recone since that was not done by EV and is not a manufacturer issue anymore. I would certainly call them and talk to them, but unfortunately that initiative should have been put in motion by your dealer.

Ben

Once again, I appreciate ALL comments, most importantly....Ben's. I really appreciate your professional input.
One thing, I've learned is that, customer service overrides everything else....the little money I thought I was saving is spent already and I'm still NOT satisfied with the result. Next time, I know where to go. I never thot I would be in this position, but that's why one should only deal with a reputable place...just like an insurance. You never know when you will need it.
I will update everyone of my final resolution.

Customer service definitely seals the deal for me. My Toyota's were bought at a dealer farther away than my local toyota dealer because the customer service is that much better. Anytime I went to the local toyota dealer, I felt like I was no one. In fact, to make a long story short - the local dealer knew I was looking for a Tundra for a year and still couldn't find it. The farther away one found it in 20 mins! They won my business! Customer service is stellar! We've been very happy with them - so happy that we got another toyota! On the music side of the house - Ben and Kat ROCK the house!

:)

Ben, please chime in on this.... If I decide to replace the woofer with a new woofer...will that make my zxA5 warranty-able again??? thanks

connections...

Nope, I didn't do any reverse "Y" connection.
I had a BBE maximizer connected before a crossover....crossover split signals to amp ---> speaker and the highs were sent to the ZXa5. ZXa5 was set with High Pass ON.
the low signal goin to the bass was at 2'o clock and the hign signal to ZXa5 was @ 12 o'clock as the ZXa5 doesn't need any boost...its already HIGH by design.

Using a Maximer before a Crossover may be the key to the problem right there. My suggestion is to use the BBE AFTER the Crossover on the Bass output. You also need to use very sparingly, especially at loud volumes.

I would lose all of that processing that you are sending to the ZX5's. Powered speakers do not need external processing. The best way to run powered boxes is directly from your mixer. The speakers were doomed before the gig because of the configuration of the rig. Powered speakers will give years of good service with just a direct signal. Maximizers were made to color the sound in low end gear.

I would order the proper woofer from EV or through Ben. Replace it myself and reconfigure the rig for a direct line from your mixer to your speakers.

I agree do not use a processor with active speakers unless it comes from the manafacture and designed for said speaker.

Once again, thanks for the additional input...No more processors for me...I'm replacing my non powered subs with powered subs...
I agree with everyone that I F*#*d with my connections...
Okay, this is the UPDATE, after I took the speaker back to the repair center, the tech said one of the connectors came loose and he reconected it and clamped.
Guess what?, that was only good for about an hour the first time I used the speaker...so twice his professional workmanship on a $1400 speakers have FAILED.
At this point, I think I've had it with them...I'm convinced that this dude is NOT qualified to work on my speaker....
QUESTION: Is is necessary for me to get EV involved at this point?
