What's the difference between "what's new" and "new posts"?
In the old version, once I log in in the morning, after that, my new posts counted to maybe 20 or 30, depending on how often I log back in.
Now every time it's 6, 7 or 8 pages.

What's new is all content - Articles, blogs, and forums. The upgraded software has a bunch of new features.
New posts is just forum posts. For a shortlink to just forum posts you can bookmark this link: http://ourdjtalk.com/search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=vBForum_Post (Right click and bookmark) don't bookmark the resulting page.

when I get to the home page, and try to click on the drop down arrow for MY NOTIFICATIONS
the very top of a white window/box appears...but it is mostly hidden behind the black horizontal bar at the top

Try changing the skin -- the little dropdown box at the bottom of the page...
I use the vB4 Default Style.

When I go to "new posts" I always get like 100 new posts - even if I log out and log back in 5 minutes later.
In the prior version, if I came back after 5 minutes, I'd see maybe 5 new posts.
Now I find that I'm seeing the same "new" posts over and over.
What am I missing?

That probably has to do with the templates we're using.
The old one, listed new posts in threads you were subscribed to since last visit, then below that, had new posts in other older threads, that you might not have seen -- so it was easy to differentiate what was actually new, that you cared about.
I agree, I don't like it either -- but perhaps a new template would solve the issue...

I don't think that's quite correct. All new posts since the last visit were listed first, regardless if you were subscribed or not.
And, I don't think it's a template edit either.

Don't know for sure -- just taking a guess. I can't see them losing the past functionality that the templates had.
If you've ever worked with any of this BB/CMS junk, the template/skins, are what control what is displayed, and how. It looks like we just have the basic templates right now, and not a customized version like we had before. I think Danno paid some good bucks for that to be developed for us.
Since they didn't make everything backward compatible with the upgrade to 4, I think he'd have to have someone rebuild it from scratch, to mimic the functionality we had prior.
All the same capabilities should still be there, just the templates need to be rewritten to match the new specs...
You're partially correct...it's not so much the template edits as it was the Mods/Hacks that are installed. Alot of the ones Danno was using with the old version haven't been updated to Vb4 yet (and may never be) from what I understand. I still use version 3.8.x on my site and the new posts is standard functionality as I had mentioned above. Every Vb4 board I visit, has it displayed this new way. (Which there must be some sort of settings to adjust as well, because DjChat operates more closer to Vb 3.8, but still differently.
