Just picked up my new EV Live-X 12s

Starting to wind down now. Needless to say, these things bring some serious firepower for not a lot of dough. I'm but VERY VERY pleased with this purchase. I was in a 5k sq ft room tonight and these dudes filled it up, no problem. Used the sba760 sub and working with a live drummer (very loud) and they held their own. One note, at the first of the dance set I noticed they were clipping, a lot. I have signal going to the 760, then sending the crossover (above 100hz) signal to the X. At first, I had the Xs in full range mode. Took it out of full range and put them in "sub" mode. Clip lights went away. I still tapped them occasionally thru the rest of the night but nothing to be concerned about. The amp section is just lukewarm to the touch, never got hot the whole night. I've been hitting these dudes since 3pm and it's 8:22p now. Also, the coverage is outstanding and they have a nice, long throw. The entire room is filled nicely.

One suggestion. Get an active crossover you'll be amazed how much easier things are and no worries about what frequencies are getting through. A DBX 223XL will make you happy.

have you measured the spl that the live x speakers give out? the reason i ask is because theres talk on other forums of the live x speakers sensitivity being very low and with the low power handling they're just not capable of that great output. although whats loud in one person's mind might not be loud in anothers.
You're always going to have folks saying this speaker or that speaker isn't this or is that..... bottom line. Does it work for you? If it does then who gives a crap unless someone ferrets out a real defect.

I just can't imagine playing the music that loud. I have always got complimented at how my music level always lets people sit a visit and they don't want to leave because the music was so loud.
I am only assuming based on your post but for weddings, I never push it like some of you say you do.
Can't wait to use the L1's for the first time. Just to see the difference up close and personal.

I agree and I'll add that the venues I work at tell me all the time how people have complained about loud systems.
I didn't measure SPL last night. Yes, there's such a thing as playing too loud, I agree. That said, I was amazed at how clean and clear those dudes were, and it was the same at low volume or high volume. VERY brilliant highs and they didn't get that harsh-ness that I expect from my ZXA1s, when they're cranked.
Wanna stop seeing the clip lights? Reduce the signal going into the mixer a bit. Control the gain staging. Turn the speaker gain up to almost the max and then control the SPL output by controlling the signal going into the mixer and the gain and individual channel faders on the mixer.
I run my passive speakers with the amp attenuators turned all the way up. The laptop volume level never goes above 40-50 and the program that plays the music never goes to 100%. Essentially the same idea with powered speakers. If the signal is too hot you're going to clip -OR- you're pushing your speakers too hard and you need more powerful speakers or more speakers.

Boy has that statement been argued up and down. Personally, I believe that increases the noise floor to unacceptable levels. Do you here a hiss or hum when no music is playing?
Definition of Noise Floor: The residual level of noise in any system. The lower the noise floor and the higher the headroom, the more usable dynamic range a system has.
Interesting idea, thanks. I currently run my player at about 85% and the windows' volume also at about 85%. Last night, I was running the sub at about -6db and the X12s at about 75% open. On the mixer (VMX1000usb), I was generally tapping into the yellow but staying out of red.

Passive I run amps wide open and control level via master fader.
With the Live X I run the level at 75% and the input at about 65% the sub depends on how I use it, But generally at one or two dots ahead of 50%.

This is NOT the way to run amps. Read up on Noise Floor. Everything in your signal chain should never reach max. Rather it be input or outputs.

Setting ones computer at 100% does not mean your singal output is higher than 0db.

So by having amps wide open, I will have less noise by my mixer being at -20db.
To each their own, I do what works for me.
