Downloading new drivers, updating drivers

especially when they say they bought it 3x weeks ago and now the CD's missing
kids played with it (any excuse)

but yes file servers and web surfing is great

I get to do two lots of work at the same time

drivers on one screen and typing in here on the other lol

I'm going to wait for the new "LightningBolt" technology -- should be out next year, and connects directly into the brain, via a 9 pin ear socket... :yoBiggrin:

Is it just me or does the Thunderbolt name sound ridiculous?

No, no, no. The ear socket is still in development, right now the only available and working one is the anal socket yorofl:

My Toshibas are 6 months old and a year & half old, works for me, in 6 months I'll sell the oldest and get a new one, i usaully spend 500 or less on lappys, wish I had all the money I spent on lap dances back

I thought that when I read about it a few days ago... but whatever it's called, I like the specs. And it doesn't sound very "Applely" to me.

Since you have inside the industry insight, when do you think I'll be able to get one of these much better/faster/low power consumption laptops with 4GB RAM and a 500GB drive for around $500-$600? Around $600 is really about the most I want to spend. LCD or LED is fine, I don't care, as long as it's fast and I can use it for maybe 3 years. How will I know what to look for? Is there a new graphics chip set they'll be having? Is there a new i5 model name? Also I would prefer ATI graphics rather than nvidia or Intel. Really don't want an AMD based machine . . .

I would guess that you will see the new chipsets come in at the same price point as existing systems. Much like the new iPad, you pay the same but get the next generation power. For $500-600 I would hope you could find a well built, but consumer level i3 CPU, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive (but it would be 5,400 rpm) and integrated video driving a glossy 15" screen. That new (Intel HD Graphics 3000) integrated video should easily be capable of driving 1366x768 or 720p HD video without glitches.

I would expect to spend more like $800+ for an i5 with discrete video driving a 1600x900 glossy screen and a 7,200 rpm 500GB HD and again, that would probably be consumer level. A business model, non-flexing chassis and a non-glare screen with a 1 year warranty is probably going to start at $1K.

No one will have to guess at specs & pricing when these finally hit the street in a couple of weeks.

For graphics I put more faith in nVidia than ATI. nVidia seems to be the stable business graphics while ATI has been leaning more towards gaming and pushing the limits too far making it unstable. FYI - ATI is part of AMD in case anyone missed that acquisition about 5 years years ago.

AMD seems to be a generation behind Intel and needs to come up with some kind of breakthrough to catch up.
 
For $600 I need an i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB drive and a 17" screen. If I have to wait 3 months, 6 months whatever. If I get to where I need the machine and can't wait it out, I'll settle for a $500 laptop with all the above but it just won't have the nifty newer i5. I've already seen some decent $500 machines, even with LCD screens surprisingly. I really don't want a dual core or Core Duo, they are already over the hill as far as I'm concerned. My 3 year old dell has a Core 2 Duo.

edit: That should have read "even with LED screens".

Scott has succumbed to the hype that is the Intel Machine... ;) :D
 
Years ago I was big AMD fan when I used to build my own PCs. In fact one of the machines I built about 6 or years ago is still chugging along. My wife uses it for fooling around on Facebook, playing her little internet games, emeail etc.

A few years ago-about 4- I got my first laptop, it was a Toshiba with an AMD processor. That thing ran so hot you could fry an egg on it. It eventually died and I decided two things. 1. no more AMD based machines, 2. no more Toshiba laptops. a couple ofyears ago I got a cheapo Acer laptop for my daughter-Intel-which has been fine, no problems, I'd consider another Acer. I'm sure many people have good experiences with AMD AND Toshiba, but they are not my first choices at this point.
