To tell you the truth. I am glad that not everyone wants to be self employed and have their own business. I want there to be someone to bag my groceries when I go food shopping. We (Not me) also need people to flip burgers. :triwink:

I said if I was single with no kids, I could survive.
As to my wife being a partner, I have asked her if she would like to do this and she said "NO". I did have her DJ 1 event when I first started. Got someone who wanted me to DJ but I was booked. I offered to have my wife do it because it was using the equipment on hand so she did it. She hated everything about it. Does not want any part of being a DJ.
As to spending more time on the business, If I had a town or city around me that had more than a few thousand people in it, I would but being rural and wedding season being June to October, there is only so much I can do.
There is very little weekday DJ work around here. I do not like bars but do a few of them a year. But that is on weekends and in the winter when there are very few weddings.
Hmmm.... 85% of respondents are not full time.....I said 80%; looks like I was off...

My benefits through work do cost, but cost a hell of a lot less than if I had to purchase them privately....Don't know what you're speaking of when you talk other deductions.
I take of $50 per week, for vacation pay, 50 per week for health, 50 per week for retirement...I guess I'm eating dog food......I don't know what City you live in, but in my City a dj ain't working 52 weeks a year....
I don't have to call in to take vacation, a sick day...whatever. However I do get paid when i take vacation; I am paid when i get sick......
I think there's a misconception when someone states thet are a full time DJ; to me that means; not a multi-op, you don't offer photographt, video.....DJ'ing is your only sole income.
In my area there is no way amyone can make any sort of living as a full time DJ...You can regurgitate all of the typical GWYW vomit; you can't run a business, you don't charge enough, you don't market enough, you have no self confidence....blah, blah, blah....
I make 6 figures + at my day job; why in hell would I take 30% of that just so I can say I'm a full time dj? I don't "love" it that much.
In my market - the business just isn't there...period....
He's not complaining, he's merely stating a fact that the business isn't there to offset his 9-5 income. He does it because he loves it and enjoys the compensation level it provides.
I thin k it comes down to what you want as a person.... how hard you want to work and how large of a standard of living you want...

You get what you want outa life, what is important to you, you will get it.... What is important to you is different than what is important to me,,,, never let anyone tell you what to do, how to do it and so on, make youyr own path, and be happy in your life.... when you die, and we all will, how will you look back on your life?

I'm full time DJ, but...I'm also retired military and thereby have a degree of financial support to fall back on if needed. I own my own business and the only DJ. I did over 35 gigs last year, but block dates, too, so my wife and I can have a life, too.

I think this comes from a desire to compare ourselves with others and validate what we are doing. Some people that consider themselves "full time" believe that it makes them a better DJ. Some "Part timers" believe this offers them the flexibility of being able to do things full time DJs can't...like be more flexible on price...none of which I think are true.
The reality is we all have different situations. It has NEVER been about full or part time work, it's about full or part time service. There are some that are better at time management than can maintain a full time job and get MORE done in their spare time that some can get done with all of their time.
Personally, I consider myself full time in this business. I do have other streams of income, but this by far takes priority. But, we don't have children and my wife gets excellent benefits for us. Those 2 factors make a big difference in me being in business for myself full time. Doesn't make me a better DJ by any means than one of my DJs that has 6 kids and needs to work full time for someone else to get benefits for them all...one of them with special needs.
Yes, if we took 2 people with strikingly similar situations in similar geographical areas and one was able to be a single op DJ full time and the other wasn't, I would say the full timer was probably better overall. He may simply be a better business man and not a better DJ. But the reality is situations are typically NEVER that similar, so making a comparison based on "full time" or "part time" doesn't work for me, so I've simply never cared who is full time and who isn't.
Scott I am not saying which is better, it has nothing to do with that for me... When someone asks if you are full time (not YOU But ya know), how hard is it to understand what they are asking?
Why is there always this big deal about it? Way back before I was a DJ I was a butcher in a store,,,,, when someone asked me what I did I was a butcher,, full time,,,, no explanation needed,,, people know what that means....
Why is it when someone asks, and to be honest, it only comes up on chat boards so I shouldn't even worry about it,,, in fact, ya know,,, I wont.....
