I see some new Gobo projectors out and would like to know if anyone has tried them? I see both Amdj and Chauvet have new LED versions out. Maybe Ben has seen them at the show.

After getting into gobo projection in the past few months, I can't understand why anyone would go with anything other than a projector. It's so simple and you've purchased a piece of gear that can do multiple things; rather than just project monograms.

Btw, what kind of process does it take to display the image with these new toys? Special paper needed? Printer? Does the unit come with some sort of template or tell you how to create the monogram?

Frankly, the image above is not good (blurry & small). I certainly don't think it would have been my first choice to display to a bunch of djs who want to get into monogram projection. ;)

I agree.. this wasn't the ideal picture to post, but unfortunately it's the best "first look" I have on a brand new projector. At the show pictures are often taken with cell phones.

This unit uses the standard steel gobos we make for so many DJs already. :)

Randy - for straight forward, easy, quick set up...anywhere: these units will have an advantage. You can make your own gobo....That being said....with the new wireless and usb stick capable projectors; that option gets much easier

CHAUVET®, a leading manufacturer of LED lighting, announces the perfect accessory piece for any mobile entertainer, DJ, special event or retail environment, the Gobo Zoom™ LED. It’s a super-compact gobo projector featuring a unique manual zoom function that’s perfect for short-throw or long-throw applications. It’s illuminated by one white 10 W LED and runs much cooler than units using a conventional light source. This means it has no duty cycle as LED-based projectors can run all night long.

Gobo Zoom™ LED comes with a four color gels and eight metal gobos to complement a variety of events. Or you can print your own custom gobos on transparency film. Its gobo holder can be easily accessed for quick, tool-free changes—which makes creating and displaying custom gobos for any event a breeze. The eight included gobos are described as either text-based gobos, like ‘Happy Birthday’, ‘Happy Holidays’, ‘Congratulations’, or image-based gobos, such as hearts, musical notes, stars, happy couple dancing and snowflakes.

The fixture can be controlled by two channels of DMX or has stand-alone operation that allows you to control the rotation and speed without DMX. It has a zoom angle of 22-38 degrees and weighs just over four pounds.

Ah....I have a Panasonic Lumix that's about the size of a cell phone that takes great photos. You should check this power-camera out.

Steel gobos are a pain. I can sit in the comfort of my office, drinking a beer and create a custom monogram in less time than it takes to call in an order for a steel gobo.

I'm getting too old and tired to keep trying to convert people to this concept that I came up with a few years back.

Thanks Randy for carrying the torch.

Im in the same camp as Keith and Randy but, just for reference what is the initial cost of one of the better LED projectors being recommended her and their disposable ie soft costs for custom gobos steel or printed?

I'd lay money that in the long run a DLP projector and lamp of comperable brightness is going to not only be less expensive but also more versatile in its duties not to mention the ability to project solid and multi colored gobo like images.

Thoughts?

If manufacturers would listen to me there would be a DJ mixer with 3 mic inputs too.

I'm currently using my projector, hooked up to my VGA port. I make my own gobos. I'm just thinking it would be easier just to have a plug and play light. I'll be looking at them in Vegas. Any suggestions?

hirepower, what concept are you talking about?

Stay with you what you got, but look at other options other than your VGA port. They make small, portable card readers that you can mount on the back of the projector, making it portable to set up anywhere.

Thanks! I'll check that out.

How do you mount your projector to a stand when pointing the gobos down to the dance floor?

How bright is your projector? (Lumens)

Thanks for the link! I was already talking to a tech person about making me a holder for my projector. I want to see what Vegas has to offer first.

My projector is 2000.

Here's my thoughts on what Vegas will have to offer....they will not offer anything that you can't do with a projector 10x better. :triwink: :trismug:

Why go thru the hassle of ordering a steel gobo (most likely used one time) when you can create your own within minutes and have a piece of gear that is multi-functional? Seems to be no-brainer to me.

Just switched my light show to all Q-Spot 260 LED Moving Heads.
This fixture has a replaceable GOBO option that is totally unique in the industry.
GOBO change takes less than a minute and no tools needed.

Just ordered a custom GOBO from KAT at NLFX. Can't wait to try it and see the results!

Not only can I rotate the GOBO, switch from wall to floor to ceiling, focus via DMX channel, but I can layer color GOBOS to change the color!

If you require all that in a projector, more power to you. I prefer the KISS method.

This one? Too early to give it a real "hands" on evaluation, but I'll try to report back on all new models for you soon.

Ben

Ben PM me the price of this projector. I'm thinking of randy's route but it seems as if getting a $150 stand alone gobo projector just seems less expensive. I only plan to use mine for monograms for my weddings.
