For those of you who had scanners and other lights prior to getting moving heads, what made u get he moving heads?

I am considering a moving effect light for 2011
and was wondering the same thing.
My immediate thought is that moving heads would be more prone to damage
as there are more moving parts (exposed) on the outside of the unit.
(and they're more expensive)

So I have had a few scanners in the past, they work great.
Personally I prefer moving heads, why? You can cover alot more of an area with the moving heads. I love having my truss supended about the dance floor and having the heads sweep all around.
another thing if you can sit moving heads on the floor and have them sweep all over the place or have them shoot up and do a "uplight" effect
If you just looking for a light to put on a tbar, than get a scanner, but if your looking to have a light you and go all over the place with, spend the extra money on a moving head.

One of my buddies told me he prefers scanners on a truss/t-bar and he puts his moving heads on tripod stands for better "coverage" of the area. I bought some mx4s from him and they are fine BUT if I can sell them and buy 2 Chauvet 260s (which I love btw) that would be GREAT! my goal is most bang for the buck AND space is a premium for me?.
Another concern of his is having the moving heads on tripod stands for a kid function and being knocked over. But I figure if I outthem on a truss there is no need. And I can have a more elegant look with the tripods with weddings/banquets/corporate functions.

Well equipment insurance would be a good idea if your worried about that.
We have 16 feet of truss right now and soon we will be ordering another 30ft.
If you had the typical 10 oddysey or American Dj truss I'd prob use a scanner, but as your buddy said the moving head is def gonna get you more coverage.

I have both liability and equipment insurance...lol, nonetheless I don't even want it to happen as I am a claims adjuster and know the ugly side to injury claims.
I have been sound active for the past 5 years and just ordered my showexpress 100 goday from a local company for $200?. Looking forward to dmx control! I just wantto vet the most bang for the buck. I know one size doesn't fit all but I cannot afford to have multiple lights that I can't use for multiple functions.
I love my show express! I got the 512 last week! It's amazing! I love the way the moving heads run with them running on DMX, ill never go back to sound active.

One potential drawback of the Xpress100 you got is that it is limited to 100 channels (or 10 fixtures). That may never be an issue, but wanted to make sure you were aware of that. The good news is that if you ever outgrow it you'll surely find a happy buyer for it and you can upgrade to the 512.
