This past week I was DJing a wedding at a venue where there were 2 weddings going on. The DJ from the other entertainment service asked me if he could borrow some gaffers tape for taping down his cords (he claimed he forgot his)

I oblidged. About 25 minutes I realized that he never brought it back. As I walked over, I saw my tape everywhere! this guy had a zillion cords & used my entire brand new roll.

When he saw me he said "Sorry man, I needed more than I thought."
(This guy went overboard with it too)

Lessoned learned, if I loan out any again, I'll give them the cheapo messy "duct" tape I keep as a spare. not the $15 a roll stuff.

He didn't even apologize for using it all.
 
I would have simply said that will be 15 bucks thanks. You got Rick Rolled a whole Rolls worth dude.
 
I would just chalk it up to the guy's an @$$ and leave it at that. Keep lending good stuff, just not to that guy again.
 
Send him a bill for the role of gaffer tape. He knows he screwed you. Don't let him off the hook. Tell him "borrow" usually means enough to get you by.
 
It's a shame that some people think they can borrow something like that, use it up, and not even offer to replace it. You were treated shabbily.

I have no idea who this DJ was. (I got his name) But he is not a DJ service I have ever heard of. We have literally thousands of mobile DJs here in the metro area, many of them come & go.

Even if I sent him a bill, I doubt anything would come from it.

Some venues require DJ services to have liability insurance....maybe they should require them to provide their own supplies? (don't have tape?...there's a Home Depot down the street!)

I've talked to venue managers that have told me about DJs that show up with no extension cords, table, tape, Etc....and expect the venue to provide everything.

Well...this is your lucky day. I happen to have a brand new roll of gaffers tape that I will sell you for $15.

I have the opposite problem. In fact, I stopped calling ahead to tell the venue not to bother setting up a table for me. It does no good.

There is ALWAYS a table for me. I just ask them to remove it once I get there.

If he is a respectable fella...he will send you the money plus a small extra set of change for helping him out.


Try it. You got nothing to lose. And this way you can find out if he is a guy you can deal with in the future.

If I was ever in a pinch and required to borrow some gaff tape. I would simply have asked you (the other dj) if you have a roll of gaff that I can buy off of you, not borrow. I would whip out a 20 on the spot and give it to you.

It's just the type of person that I am. You were kind enough to help me out in a pinch, so some sort of compensation is in order. Now if you decline the 20 then that just goes to show how dj's help one another.

Some dj's in my area are a s s holes and think they are the best thing to the industry. These are the type that would borrow something, use it all or break it and then act like it was never their fault. Those guys would never get a damn thing from me. I would simply say I don't have it.

We pay $40 per roll here for the good stuff!
 
here in lies one of the many secrets allowing some to take home more when selling for less. You need to know your resources out there. Steve where are you buying it for 40 bucks per roll?
 
lol ours are $18.00 a roll and the good stuff too

want cheap, they sell the cheap ass stuff for $5 a roll

My local Guitar Center has 2"x60yd for $15 per roll.

I buy 4" by the case, and pay a little under $25 per roll, including shipping. I only buy about once a year...and I don't recall who I ordered from last time. This batch is made by Hosa. Single rolls are about $30-35...depending on quantity and shipping.
