We have been contemplating a photobooth. We're not going to "Make our own" - If we decide to purchase a photobooth, it will be either Fantasy or Open Air...

Photobooths are complete distractions for wedding instead of people being on your dance floor they will be waiting in line to have a picture taken. Besides who really want a little wallet size picture. 5 out of 10 guest take a camera to a wedding, this is something just not needed.
Isn't this why people pay big money for photographers?
I think they are a big no-no for weddings. They are very cool if you do sweet 16's and school dances.

I haven't had those issues. You'd be surprised the number of people that would rather have a strip, that is bigger than a wallet size, than a customized water bottle or some other stupid trinket.
Photobooths are just another way we can help create and capture memories.

I was at a wedding this weekend where they didn't have an "photobooth" but they had a wall. Basically they had a 8x8 wall that was painted on the bottom half and wallpaper on the top half with a chair rail down the middle. On the left side of the wall was a large picture frame, but there was no picture, the entire section of the wall was cut out. The right side of the wall had smaller picture frames with pics of the bride and groom. Anywho, people would put on silly hats and scarves and what not, and go stand behind the wall where the large frame was and have their picture taken. It looked like a family portrait type thing. Everyone used their own camera, no printouts.
Just talking from experince. The 2 weddings I have done that had photo booths I feel it took away from the event instead of adding to it.
My wedding this last weekend had a booth and it was fine. Personally if you can have a booth and be the DJ and have someone take care of it. Hell it is alot of extra money to be had.

If we as a company were to invest in a photobooth, I would seriously consider Steve's product. Give him a call and at least talk to him.
Quite the contrary.... I had one at a wedding this year and I had to practically beg people to participate in the scrapbook they were putting together with the photos..... so, not much of a distraction in my case.
And no it's not the same thing as a roving photographer captureing candid shots... these are posed with or without costumes.... like stepping into a photobooth at a mall.... except at much higher quility.... it's fun if you can get the guests interested in it.
The guy I met charges $800 for 3 hours.... and of course includes the finished product which in this case was a scrap book style photo album... with the folks signing their pictures and writing little notes.
Answer then is....sell the DJ equipment and buy a photobooth. Think of all the benefits.

Some say it's are a fad, (chocolate fountain) a couple years from now something else will take it's place. More & more businesses are popping up & they are all undercutting each other. (like Karaoke did)
If I were to invest in one, I could not imagine trying to DJ & run a photo booth at the same event. Your DJ performance would suffer. You gotta have an assistant for it.
I have done many in my 32 years of DJing, too numerous to count. My Interest at the moment is Clubs, Sound Reinforcement and my own Productions (I have one coming up this Saturday). The Holiday Season is almost here and therefore Corporate Parties abound.
If I can remain busy and never have to do another wedding I won't miss a thing. There is more independence and absolute creativity (I don't have to deal with someone's Playlist) in doing my own productions. If I wanted more Weddings I would market to that sector.
I have to admit, I don't like them either but I feel I may have to re-think it. I lost probably 2-3 weddings last year because I didn't have a photobooth. I just signed one last week (full uplighting job) but came close to losing it.....because I didn't have a photobooth.
If I'm reading correctly, $3k outlay, then I've got to work 4 events to break-even. That's a 1 year payback, easy. As much as I personally dislike them, it's something to be reckoned with.

A good booth goes for around $6000. We average 35 weddings a year. Do the math. This thing pays for itself in less than 6 months!
Year 2 , you can earn an extra $30 K.
Another way to go is to sub - contract a booth from another DJ. Then all you are doing is making a phone call and earning as much as $300 for your trouble.
In this scenario, doing 35 events a year, you would gain an extra $10 K.
Not too shabby!

The NIMBY factor makes me not want to spend that much money in a booth right now. I can sell it. I just don't think I can sell it for what you big city guys are getting, so that makes it an even longer payback time for me. Not worth it. BUT it is worth it to go the DIY route right now.
