I actually haven't planned out subs right now, I still have my 2 tour X rigs. This system was actually designed to cover our rental side of the business as well as some wedding receptions. For Any events large enough to need subs i'll use the Tour X, and bring out the single 18's or the Dual 18's for the big events. I'm looking forward to trying all kinds of configurations with the ZXA5's. From what i've heard for events under 250 you don't really need subs with the ZXA5's , although i'm curious how other people feel about that. And if anyone does use active subs with them, what was your choice?

Don't need no subs with those monsters!
I have the ZXA5s & I also have a pair of powered subs, Unless the wedding reception is in a HUGE venue with a lot of guests, no subs are needed. (IMHO)

(I also have the EV mics & the ZXA1s) EV seems to be a very good choice these days.

Okay I hope that I dont get blasted but come what may. Trust me in saying. though those tops are so sweet compared to my previous Mackie 450's only (Italian version) I learned a huge lesson once gaining the Dynacord system I currently offer. the Mackies and JBL tops I offered previous paled in comparison to having a tonally balanced thump with the Dynas. It adds huge warmth to the room and cant be filled with tops alone. I do cocktail at low volume and the elders rave at the sound and when it is time to boom the room the crowd goes wild.Istand firm with the Sub addition no matter how great the EV tops are. Rob will agree and so will many who have both and have worked without or with the subs.

There really isn't much to debate sonically if you are playing music. Even if your tops are -3db at 60HZ and you have weak subs with the same roll-off, the music will sound much better with subs. Subs unload the burden of the low bass response from the tops. This allows them to function in their most efficient range rather than struggling to push the massive quantities of air required in the low bass range. It also removes the drain of extreme power burst from the amps driving the tops. This is true even with dual 15 tops, they need subs to sound their best. (The odd, truly full range speakers with subs built-in would be a unique case but they are not portable DJ speakers.)

Not forcing the tops to produce low bass also allows you to put them up in the air on stands giving up the boundary loading they need to produce bass and get the tweeters up over people's heads so the sound travels to the back of the audience rather being absorbed by the first 3 rows of bodies as with floor standing speakers.

The only debate I see would be if the customer wants you to use a simplified system to provide a quicker load-in, setup and load-out.

Thanks Ken. I enjoyed meeting you and your brother as well. It's always a pleasure to meet enthusiastic, smart people who love our industry as much as I do.

Regarding subs, for what Ken is going to use these for, I don't think subs will be necessary. But should he elect to use them with subs for other events, the Plasma sub does a nice job of keeping up with the ZXa5.
