Just got this in a few minutes ago:

Msg=Hi Rick, I am in a meeting and was hoping you could email me a detailed list of your sound equipment that forms part of your DJ package. Will need lighting & full audio package for Aug, 21, 2010, 7-midnight. (Nashville) We have our own DJ, so basically need your service to set up and make sure all is working, then tear down. Other bids are $600 - $1,000. Please let me know if this is of interest to you. Thanks, John

Looks like it came from a photographer. Wants a "detailed list of your sound equipment", excuse me? Luckily, I was already booked (only 5 weeks out) so it was a nice, one-line "I'm booked" response. Does that wording seem odd to you or am I just being paranoid?
 
If he was going to give me a grand for sound and lights I'd hook him up. He's probably not serious but if it's within your price range, send a back-up DJ and some gear his way.
 
My reply would be:
I am very appreciative you thought of me, however, on that date I am already booked. I am curious though, what are the details of your event..how many people, what type of event is it etc..what would your DJ be bringing to attach to the rented system?
Maybe next time we can do business. In the meantime I wish you much success with the event.

That's what I thought at first. Told him I was booked (I am) and referred him to a competitor/friend. He thanked me and said he'd remember me the next time. We'll see.

He said they already have a DJ. After exchanging a couple more emails, I'm fairly convinced this was a legit offer. I'm guessing they had some stud DJ coming in from out of town and need to rent a rig for him to use. No way am I handing my rig over for some goon to rip apart.
 
i would (and have) rented out my system to another dj.
i charge the same price (plus a deposit) as if i was doing the gig myself.
i do the set-up and break down... PLUS i have a clause (and sign on the equipment) that the guest dj will not put any lights into the red and i reserve the right to control that aspect. the deposit is returned at the end of the gig, providing no equipment was damaged.:sqcool:
 
Well... since you're already booked for an engagement on the date specified it's a moot point anyhow. :)

It could well be legit. The writer obviously needs an inventory of FOH equipment available to determine if it will suit the needs of the show.

I'm not sure what a "full audio package" is supposed to include. For example, do they require a mixing board or just FOH? These details would have to be worked out in advance and specified in the service agreement.

This is important. We've agreed in good faith to allow patch-ins from performers at street festivals, only to find that all they had was a little RS mixer.

If approached I'd consider the offer. We have a decent FOH rig that's proven to be rock-solid over the years.

Here's what I'd do: Set up the rack stack with a pair of XLR cables for the DJ to patch in. Set the compressor/limiter appropriately. Close and secure the front of the processing rack case with cable locks so that no processing can be monkeyed with.

As long as the C/L is adjusted correctly, no harm can come to your rig. The DJ can redline his frontend all he wants... but your speakers will get no more input than the C/L allows them.

Load in, go home. Come back later and load out. Easy money. :)
