...and i was absolutely blown away. I rented a 4 piece system for a festival we played this weekend and it was enough and more. We were expected to cover a little under 1000 guests outside with a beach band and "background music" for a July 4th festival and I knew I'd need something more than just my QSC rig. My local rental house had the SRX rig, consisting of 2 SRX728s and 2 SRX725s along with 4 Crown amps, available for what I consider a reasonable fee of $600.

I was absolutely blown away by this system, especially the low end. The dual 18's just kicked like there was no tomorrow, even at low volume levels. During breaks for the band I got to crank it up a little and play some songs like the Cupid Shuffle and I was once again amazed.

There's a divine likelihood that I could be replacing my QSC rig with an SRX system in the very near future. The subs especially kicked more than anything I had ever heard and definitely blew my 181i's way way way wayy out of the water.

Before you buy the tops I suggest you compare the 722's which are highly regarded by live sound guys. They are also small enough to pole mount making them MUCH more versatile than the 725's which either stack or need to be up on a stage.

On the sub side, check out some of the horn loaded subs from GTR, Danley and all of the others. The 728's are near the top of the list for front loaded subs, but they only fall into the middle of the pack and are rather inefficient when stacked up against the horn loaded group.

Anything with the square orange logo does well on the resale market, so even if you already bought them you can always upgrade a year from now or rent them out. :)

Glad to see you figured this out now Ryan...

SRX are great boxes. Yes they require some big power to get the best out of them...But great sound is great sound!:sqlaugh:

Thanks Scott. I won't be jumping into a $10,000 sound upgrade right away as I just put about $5,000 into sound this year already- but it's not unreasonable for prom season next year. I gotta work on lights now!

I'll do my research. Chances are, if I go with an SRX cabinet, i'd go for a 3 way as it'd always be stacked. I have my choice of 4 different kinds of pole-mountable speakers already in my garage. One thing I can't deny- while my 122i tops sound great- the 153i 3 ways blow me away.

It'll become my new research project. I don't think I have a need for a Meyer or Danley rig- it's just overkill for the kinds of shows I do. If I were to ever get into big time PSR shows- I'd rent for a while, get a feel for the types of directions I could choose and then look at going down that road.

Power is like buying gas for your car. Sure you can drive a sleek little sedan that gets great gas mileage and looks good....or you can drive a truck that guzzles it but blows the competition away. I have no problem requiring my school clients to provide 10 dedicated 20A outlets. The only problem I see is that I'm already overpowering my venues with the 10 piece QSC rig- I doubt they could handle an SRX low-end.

Ryan,
That is a very good choice. BTW one of the reasons that JBL works so great with Crown Amps is because they are in the same family of manufacturers. They have their specs to suit each other. I have always preferred Crown and JBL to QSC. If you don't mind the weight you might want to take a look at these for Gym setups! Scroll down to 2-way, mid/hi plus low frequency and 3-way systems. Those are beasts http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/general/ProductFamily.aspx?FId=25&MID=2

I Know. They are not for everyone. You can install handles on them and why do you think they make Rock n Roller carts and dollies?:sqwink:
Did you look at their specs?

Hey Now! Those look good too! Wish they would have centered the Tweeter!

The HF in the KF650 is centered I am pretty sure.

If anybody does decide to get this particular speaker, be sure to get the processor with guinness focusing. I haven't heard it, but everybody that has upgraded to the guinness focused processor said that the speaker sounds so much better it's hard to believe it's the same cabinet, and these things sounded great to begin with.

Sorry to keep offtrack, just adding some information to an already formed tangent.

Back to the JBL discussion.

Sorry about still being off topic...

Keep in mind that these are fairly heavy cabinets, and you must get them up pretty high during setup. To get the horn over most peoples heads, the bottom of the cabinet will need to be about 6ft up, and they aren't pole mountable. You should consider some scaffolding to stack them on. I picked some up at menards for around 99 bucks each on sale and had them powdercoated black (they burned off the yellow)

I'm aware of that...
These would be used more for Live sound than DJ work. I would more than likely
build a pile of sub cab's to stack them on if the show was big enough.
A local guy runs his on top of (3) cerwin vega earthquakes per side. (2 standing up and 1 on its side)
