Am I missing some Crane-geek component that Rick is aware of?
Would not the hooks and locking plate work identically in reverse?
Either that or Rick has reached a ladder-less height that has him incapable of logical cognizance?

The only crane that was on site would not have been capable of picking it up or lowering it safely, unless controled freefall was safe!

Yes! exactly the same coming down as going up!
The problem with Rick's crane theory is that there were no cables attached going up and from all appearances no central lifting point added to the excavator, which means that it would have to be lifted from the five lifting points that are incorporated in the machine. That means that someone would have to climb up to the machine and connect a five point sling to the machine and hook it to a crane. That feat would have been much more incredible than the machine climbing the tower to begin with!
Even more impressive would have been watching a 20 ton crane doing the job of a 70 ton crane!
No, I emailed a bud across the pond, and he did some checking for me. Like I said, I have no reason to doubt him -- He's never failed me in the past.
BTW, if yer curious as to why the guy didn't seem worried, check out the neat little hooks they installed underneath, to lock it into place at each step up...

I got the answer back from Leibherr!
The excavator was brought back down, they sent and another excavator up in a fireman's suit to bring it down!
It came down the same way it went up!
Rick call the number I listed and ask for Jeff Powell, (rick only please I don't want Jeff mad at me)!

A little more information on the stunt!
It was proposed to Leibherr by a farmer who said he wanted to do it for the show on TV. He was not afiliated with Leibherr in any manner!
The basic machine was a 912 mining excavator with the counter weights gutted.
The blade was removed and the "hooks" were put on in place of the blade!
The boom and crowd were a special built modification (shortened) of the standard Face Shovel stick.
The total weight of the machine was reduced to 22 tons!

I told you I would believe it, when I see it -- since there is no proof it came back down the same way it went up, and I trust my source far more than you -- the address is on my website
BTW, the 914C, which is much bigger than that model, only weighs in at around 22-25 tons. I'd guesstimate around 15-17 tons for that modified machine...
